- Yes - The Yes Album
Editor's Choice... And this time... "The Yes Album" - the third studio album of "Yes", released on February 19, 1971. If the word "progressive" in terms of music stresses you out you, can skip this review. If you're still reading these lines, then you're probably a fan of the genre or curious to learn a bit about it. Well, you've come to the right place because here's a classic Progressive Rock album. This is Yes' third album and the band came to its recording in a problematic situation. Their previous two albums were a commercial failure and they feared the record company would not continue the relationship with them. The band members come to this album with their backs to the wall. If they do not prove themselves on this album, they will probably cease to exist as a band. Despite all that, the band decides to go all the way in and did not include cover versions of familiar songs in the album, designed to make it more accessible, as they did in the previous two albums. What’s more, the band stretches their boundaries, with even more complex compositions, expanding the range of styles and length of songs with three epic tracks around 9 minutes in time. All this probably happened with the thought that if this is going to be their last album, then it's better to be a one that reflects the creative desires of all the members. In this album, the band is joined by a significant reinforcement player, in the form of the acclaimed guitarist Steve Howe , whose addition undoubtedly influenced the sound and style of the band. This album eventually saved the band. It was a great success both in England and even in the USA. Indeed, this band will later release more perfect musical pieces, but there are still some wonderful tracks and great musical quality on this album. " Yours Is No Disgrace " written by all the band members shows us for the first time Steve Howe 's amazing playing abilities and the wonderful vocal harmonies of Chris Squire and Jon Anderson and Steve Howe . " Starship Trooper ", which is divided into three completely different parts, was written by Jon Anderson, Chris Squire , and Steve Howe separately and put together. It is based on Robert Heinlein's 1959 science fiction book. The spacey, electronic-sounding effect in the song was achieved by running the guitar backing track through a flanger effect. The anti-war song " I've Seen All Good People ", is divided into two parts. The first was written by Jon Anderson and the second by Chris Squire . Anderson wanted the piece to start quietly and develop, leading into a large church organ sound, before moving into the funky second. How beautiful is the combination of the acoustics and the harmonic singing in the first part of the song - just magic. The amazing closing track " Perpetual Change " is one of the best on this album. As its name implies - this track shows "the change" that has taken place in the band and is expected to bring it to other heights. Anderson was inspired to write the lyrics by the view of the countryside. The middle of the track features a polyrhythmic structure, where two pieces of music in different time signatures are playing simultaneously. - Tony Iommi
There is a chance that without Tony Iommi the Metal world would not have existed. What's sure is that it would not have sounded the way it does today. (Photo by Adam Bielawki) So before we write some facts about the metal legend, here are some quotes about the man and the legend, from his colleagues: Brian May – " The True Father of Heavy Metal " Eddie Van Halen – " Without Tony, Heavy Metal Wouldn't Exist " James Hetfield – " The King of the Heavy Riff " Rob Halford - " The Man Who Invented the Heavy Metal Riff " Ronnie James Dio – " the Ultimate Riff Master " Gene Simmons - " The Man Who Came Up With the Riffs That Launched an Army of Guitar Players " 1. He was born on 19 February 1948 in Birmingham, England, the only son of Maria and Frank Iommi. His name at birth was Anthony Frank Iommi. 2. His parents were Italian Catholic and they owned a winery, before immigrating to England. 3. Iommi attended the same school as Ozzy Osbourne studied, just a year below him. He was insecure as a child. 4. He fell and cut his upper lip when he was 8 years old, when another child chased after him. The incision earned him the nickname "Scar Face," which added to his insecurity. 5. Iommi was ashamed of the cut and when he grew up he grew a mustache to hide it. The mustache became his trademark. 6. At the age of 10 he began to learn Karate, Judo, and later also boxing, all so that he could defend himself from the gangs that were in his neighborhood. 7. As a child he wanted to play the drums, but due to the noise, he was persuaded by his parents to learn to play the guitar instead. 8. After graduating he worked as a plumber and later in a metal factory for the production of rings. 9. Beginning in the mid-1960s he began playing in blues-rock bands, the first of which was "Rockin' Chevrolets", in which he played from 1964-1965. 10. In the years 1966-1967 he played in the band "the Rest" where he met drummer Bill Ward . (Photo: Chris Walter, Getty Images) 11. After "Mythology" - another band of Iommi and Ward, disbanded, Iommi responded to an ad hung by Ozzy Osbourne at a record store in Birmingham, that read:" Ozzy Zig Needs Gig — has own PA". The ad caught the attention of Tony Iommi and Bill Ward and they invited him to join the band. Ozzy brought his bandmate "Rare Breed" - bassist Geezer Butler . 12. The four joined slide guitarist Jimmy Phillips and saxophonist Alan "Aker" Clarke and called their band "Polka Tulk Blues Band", but after only two performances the last two were fired and the band changed its name to "Earth", in September 1968. 13. Shortly afterward Iommi left the band and joined "Jethro Tull". He played with them during two performances, the most famous of which is "The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus", which was released as an album and a movie. 14. Iommi returned to "Earth" as early as November 1968 and in August 1969 the band changed its name to "Black Sabbath", to avoid confusion with another band operating in England at the time. 15. They released their first album " Black Sabbath ", on Friday, February 13, 1970. 16. It was not just a debut album, but the one that is the mainstay of the Heavy Metal genre and the album that will lay the foundations for Doom Metal as well, with a particularly heavy, metallic, and gloomy sound. 17. This sound is attributed in part, to an accident Iommi had in a metal factory at the age of 17, in which he lost the tips of his two middle fingers in his right hand. As a result, he was sure he would not be able to play anymore. 18. He is left-handed so his right hand should be on the neck of the guitar, which could have really prevented him from playing. 19. To overcome the pain and limitation created by cutting his fingers, Iommi wrapped them in small plastic caps, cut, heated and moistened from plastic bottles, which contributed to the metallic sound that emanated from the guitar. 20. What added to the dark and metallic sound was the fact that Iommi used to loosen the guitar strings a bit to prevent pressure on his fingers and allow him to stretch the strings while playing more easily. At first it was half a tone and later even lowered the guitar tuned by a tone and a half, such as on the album " Master Of Reality ". 21. In order t play the same scale as Iommi, Geezer Butler also had to lower the tuning of his bass guitar in those halftones, which contributed even more to the heavy and gloomy sound, which became associated with "Black Sabbath". 22. In 1973, Iommi married his first wife - Susan Snowdon. On their way to the alter, the track "Fluff" from the album " Sabbath Bloody Sabbath " was played. Iommi's best man at the wedding was "Led Zeppelin" drummer John Bonham . 23. At the same year, Iommi produced one of the songs on the album "Orexis of Death" by the band "Necromandus". This album will only be released in 1999. 24. In 1979, after a number of Masterpiece albums released by "Black Sabbath", Iommi and his friends were forced to let Ozzy Osbourne out of the band, due to addiction and behavior issues. Iommi was the first of the band members to meet with Ozzy's replacement Ronnie James Dio at his home in Beverly Hills. 25. Already in their first meeting the two began writing the materials for the first album of Black Sabbath's second lineup - " Heaven And Hell ". In this album, Iommi will be responsible for the updated sound of "Black Sabbath". 26. After two very successful albums with Dio, the idyll ends and Iommi finds himself looking for a singer to lead the band, once again. Many names have been suggested as substitutes but Iommi remembers that Ian Gillan was the most appropriate name. He turned to Ian Gillan , who at first was not enthusiastic, but after a long night of drunkenness in a pub in Oxford Gillan relented and committed to the project. 27. Ian Gillan leaves after only one album, " Born Again ", which was released in 1983 and this time Geezer Butler also decides to leave, leaving Tony the only original member. 28. Tony decides to release a solo album and enlists bassist-singer Glenn Hughes for the project. However under pressure from the record company the album " Seventh Star " was released in 1984, under the name of "Black Sabbath". 29. In 1985, Iommi was joined by members of the original lineup of "Black Sabbath" for a one-time reunion as part of the " Live Aid " show, that will eventually leas to the " Reunion " album released in 1998. 30. In the mid-1980s Iommi was engaged to musician and singer Lita Ford. At the time he produced an album for her, called "The Bride Wore Black". But, this album was never released as the relationship between the two did not end well and Ford did not want to release the album afterwards. 31. In 1987 Tony Martin 's era of "Black Sabbath" had started, with Iommi serving as the only original member of the band, for the most part. During this period the band will release 5 albums over 8 years until 1995, with a short break for the purpose of reuniting the Ronnie James Dio lineup, on the 1992 album " Dehumanizer ". 32. In fact Tony Iommi was the only original band member to have played and participated in each and every one of "Black Sabbath's" 19 studio albums, on its various lineups. 33. In 1992, Tony Iommi appears in the Tribute Show in memory of Freddie Mercury , alongside members of Queen. Brian May is a good friend of Iommi and beyond the fact that he was featured on the song "When Death Calls" from the album " Headless Cross " by "Black Sabbath", there has been rumors for many years, that the two are interested in releasing something together. 34. In 1993, Iommi participates in writing and playing the song "Starcrossed (Lovers in the Night)" from the album "Death and Progress", by "Diamond Head". 35. In 1999, Iommi was featured on the song "Utopian Blaster" from the album "The" Carnival Bizarre, by the band "Cathedral". 36. In 2000 Iommi releases his first solo album " Iommi ". The album features top-notch metal artists such as Henry Rollins, Serj Tankian , Dave Grohl , Billy Corgan , Phil Anselmo , Peter Steele and Ozzy Osbourne . (Photo: Larry Hulst) 37. In 2004 he released his second solo album "The 1996 DEP Sessions", which included recordings he made with Glenn Hughes in 1996, but have not been released since. 38. Iommi will continue his collaboration with Glenn Hughes on his third solo album " Fused ", released in 2005. 39. In 2006, Iommi is featured on Ian Gillan 's album "Gillan's Inn". 40. In October 2009 Iommi was reunited with Ian Gillan and the two formed the supergroup " WhoCares " which also includes Jon Lord , Jason Newsted and Nicko McBrain . 41. This supergroup releases the single "Out of my Mind" in 2011 and later also released a full album to raise funds for the rehabilitation of Armenia, after the earthquake that struck it in the late 1980s. 42. In October 2006, Iommi joins the Dio era lineup of "Black Sabbath", this time under the name "Heaven & Hell". The band went on a tour and released the studio album " T https:// en.faceoffrockshow.com/post/black-sabbath-the-end-of-the-end-1he Devil You Know ", in 2009. 43. In 2012 he was diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer, and he successfully undergoes treatment. 44. In 2013 he wrote the song "Lonely Planet" which represented Armenia at that year's Eurovision contest. 45. That same year he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Coventry for his contribution to music. 46. 2013 was a busy year for Iommi, he also released the excellent album " 13 " along with "Black Sabbath". An album that marks the return of Ozzy Osbourne to the band. After 4 years of performances, on February 4, 2017, the band will also make its last performance , until 2025 when the 4 original members will reunite for a farewell " Back to the Beginning " show. 47. Iommi has two nationalities - English and Italian. 48. In 2019, Iommi was a guest on the song "Astorolus - The Great Octopus" from "Candlemass's" album "The Door to Doom". 49. In 2011, "Rolling Stone" magazine ranked Iommi in 25th place, out of the 100 best guitarists of all time. 50. In 2012, readers of "Guitar World" magazine ranked him seventh among the greatest guitarists of all time. "Face/Off" - Israel's Rock Blog Follow us on Facebook / Instagram or Subscribe to our website
- Kiss - Kiss
On February 18, 1974, "Kiss" released their debut eponymous album "Kiss". This is the day when the seismographic sensors in the music world began to rage, ahead of the earthquake that will bring us one of the greatest and most successful bands of all time. A band that will set new standards for the concept of "show", with crazy performances. A band that their millions of fans around the world will adopt the nickname "Kiss Army". Apparently, there is no American glam hard rock band in the 1970s and 1980s that was not influenced by "Kiss" in one way or another, so this debut album is where it all started. It's amazing to think how this album, includes such immortal songs like " Deuce ", " Black Diamond ", " Firehouse ", " Strutter " and " Cold Gin ", which to this day star in the band's setlists. What's even more amazing is that this album was almost completely ignored when it was released and in other cases was badly criticized. The only reason that seems logical to us for this dissonance, is probably the huge gap between the way the band looked and sounded in their energetic and bombastic performances and the relatively clean and polished sound of this album that failed to convey the "real thing" to the audience. The roots of this album are planted in a band called "Wicked Lester", consisting of singer and guitarist Paul Stanley and singer and bassist Gene Simmons , aka Chaim Witz who was born and raised in The Krayot, Haifa, Israel. During their time together in "Wicked Lester", Stanley, and Simmons recorded an album in 1972, that was eventually not released and excerpts from it will appear in a box released by the band "Kiss" in 2001. Disappointed by the unsuccessful attempt, led Simmons and Stanley to the decision that they need to form a new band. They caught sight of an ad published by drummer Peter Criss on August 31, 1972, in which he stated that he was looking for a band that played original material in a soft and heavy rock style. Criss was of course joined the band and on December 14, 1972, while Paul Stanley now published a newspaper ad of his own, about a band looking for a guitarist. One of the respondents to the ad was Ace Frehley whose look initially frightened the other three members, but his playing immediately captivated them, thus completing the classic lineup of "Kiss". The quartet immediately began working on their debut album, while simultaneously plowing the small stages in pubs and clubs across New York, formulating and polishing their sound, refining and upgrading the crazy show that would become their trademark. Kiss First Concert was held on January 30, 1973, at a small club in Queens, New York, when less than two months later, in March 1973, the band recorded a 5-piece demo tape with legendary producer Eddie Kramer. This recording will help them sign their first recording contract with "Casablanca Records". On October 10, 1973, the band entered "Bell Sound" Studios in New York. All the material for the album, except for the song " Kissin' Time ", was written by Stanley and Simmons during the time of their previous band "Wicked Lester". The two also shared the lead vocals on most of the album's songs, except three in which drummer Peter Criss also participated, among them the amazing album-ending song “ Black Diamond ”. The album opens up with " Strutter " and Criss' short drum intro. A song whose lyrics were written by Paul Stanley and its melody is based on an old song written by Gene Simmons and called "Stanley the Parrot". The song that was part of the first demo the band ever recorded, was released as the third and final single from the album, and is part of the band's setlists. It is interesting to note that in 1978 the band recorded an updated version of the song, included in the "Double Platinum" collection album. Immediately after comes " Nothin' to Lose ", which was the band's first single, probably in light of its catchy and bouncy chorus. Gene Simmons wrote it and shares vocals with Peter Criss. He wrote it as an invitation to experience "other kind" of sex. This is the band's first song featuring an outside artist - Bruce Foster who plays the piano. " Firehouse " was written by Paul Stanley when he was in high school. He was influenced by the song "Fire Brigade" by "The Move". For those who are interested, Simmons used to spit fire during this song in the bands' performances. (Photo: Kiss Facebook Page) " Cold Gin " is the first song Ace Frehley wrote for the band. It was on the New York subway. He said it just fell on him, everything from the head, both words, and music and he had nowhere to write it so he had to remember everything. Ace Frehley who was then insecure as to his singing abilities asked Simmons to sing what would become one of the band's biggest hits. Ace Frehley noted that the song was written about the drink that warms him on cold nights, but there is a more detailed version according to which "cold gin" refers to the so-called stimulating effect it has on the male sexual urge, which manages to maintain a problematic relationship as well. This song received an interesting cover version by "Disturbed" in a tribute show to legendary guitarist Dimebag Darrell . It was his favorite song, which was also performed by "Pantera" and "Skid Row" in 1992, with Ace Frehley being a special guest. The song was also played during Dimebag's funeral. The song that closes the first side of the album " Let Me Know ", was formerly called "Sunday Driver". This is the first song Stanley played for Simmons when he first met him and which the two recorded in their previous band "Wicked Lester". The two also share the lead vocals in this song. The other side of the album opens up with " Kissin' Time ", written by Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe. It was not included in the original album at all. In fact, the song was recorded two months after the album was released, because the record company thought that the album was not commercially successful. This song was the first hit for singer Bobby Rydell in 1959 and was released as a single by "Kiss" on May 10, 1974, increasing the album sales. It was included in the reissue of the album released in July 1974, but this was against the band's wishes. The second track on the other side " Deuce " was written and sung by Gene Simmons who to this day claims he does not know what the lyrics are about. He got the idea when he was on the bus. He got home and completed the writing on his bass guitar. It was the first song Ace Frehley played with the band, when he auditioned and it was the opening song in the band's first live shows. " Love Theme from Kiss " is an instrumental track that was rolled out of a song called "Acrobat", that the band played at concerts in 1973. The original song can be found in a box released by the band in 2001. To the best of our recollection, it is the only track of the band where writing credit was given to all 4 band members. " 100,000 Years " which begins with Simmons' bass riff included a long drum drum solo by Criss during the band's performances. It was inspired by a book that Simmons read by the same name, according to which aliens allegedly visited earth a hundred thousand years ago. The final track on the album is one of the most beautiful in the "Kiss" catalog. " Black Diamond " was written by Paul Stanley , who also sang the quiet part of the song at the beginning accompanied by the 12-string guitar. After Stanley shouts "Hit It" and the whole band enters drummer Peter Criss takes the lead. The song ends with the chords slams being slowly distorted until the "black" end... After the departure of Peter Criss the drummers who replaced him, Eric Carr and Eric Singer used to perform the song in the band's gigs. The album cover is a kind of homage to the Beatles' "With The Beatles" album cover. Gene Simmons noted that the Fab Four were a great inspiration for him. To this day Gene Simmons argues that this is his band's favorite album. - Live - Secret Samadhi
Editor's Choice... And this time, the band's "Secret Samadhi" album which was released on February 18, 1997. This is the band's fourth studio album or third, depending on where the writers are from, and we'll explain: Live began its career as a Public Affection and in 1989 released its debut album "The Death of a Dictionary". In 1990 the band released the EP "Divided Mind, Divided Planet" and only in June 1991 was the band renamed to Live, with the first material the band released under that name being the EP "Four Songs" released in September 1991. The first full studio album under the name Live was released on the last day of 1991 and was called " Mental Jewelry ", but as mentioned, it was actually the second studio album of the same band, making the album the fourth album to be covered. Three years after the meteoric success of the excellent breakthrough album " Throwing Copper " , the band returns with a heavier and darker album than its predecessor, which shifts the weight to the gloomier moments the band hinted at in the previous album. True, this album is not as perfect as its predecessor, but it is still in our humble opinion one of the band's great albums worth dwelling on. The opening song " Rattlesnake " is dynamic and mesmerizing. It consists of quiet and penetrating verse and distortion entrances in the chorus. A surprising choice that gives an epic touch to the opening of the album. Immediately after that, " Lakini's Juice " emerges with the heavy, dark staccato riff. It was the first single released from the album and features a combination of strings that bounce the song, especially the amazing crescendo at the end. Listen to " Freaks " and its bizarre chords throughout the verses, explode along with the sawing guitar at the entrance to the chorus and shake your head in the passage passages, and back for goodness sake. What a songgggggggggg..... And now you will feel like a chilled ice cream pouring into a boiling pot, look how it melts, that's how we feel when we hear the ballad " Turn my Head " that just breaks us to pieces. And here's the "punk and new vibe " Heropsychodreamer ", the catchy and classic " Merica ", " Graze " whose combination of sawed-off guitars and Ed's vocals sends chills through us, the complex and dynamic " Ghost " that stretches beyond the 6-minute barrier, the ending song " Gas Hed Goes West " with the amazing melody in the singing of Ed Kowalczyk and more... The songs we mentioned and others are enough to define this album as a very good album, which alternative and post-grunge fans should not ignore. - Bloodywood - Rakshak
Written By: Noam Asulin Release Date - 18.2.2022 "Bloodywood" comes from New Delhi, India. The band was formed in 2016 and started out as a parody band that does covers of pop and Indian songs. They later released a cover album called "Anti-Pop Vol. 1", with songs by "Backstreet Boys", "50 Cent", Ariana Grande, "Nirvana" and "Linkin Park", but the band soon began writing original songs. The band was formed by Karan Katiyar (guitars, flutes, and production) who joined Jayant Bhadula (growls), whom he met at a local show. Together they started producing covers for pop songs. Later, rapper Raoul Kerr, who was initially a guest on the band's songs joined the band. "Bloodywood" is influenced by bands like "Limp Bizkit", "Linkin Park" and more and plays nu-metal combined with Indian folk and electronic music. For their debut album - "Rakshak" (Savior in Hindi), "Bloodywood" chose to use only original material, while re-recording some of the singles that were released in the past. The band claims that several record companies approached them with an offer to finance the release of the album, but they decided to release it independently. (Photo: Fanart.TV) The album begins with the song " Gaddaar ". A few words are heard in Hindi and then guitars begin combining traditional Indian instruments and electronic samples. It is a political protest song that goes out against politicians who rely on sowing hatred to win votes and raise their political status. The album itself is not diverse in terms of sound and all the songs have the same characteristics, rap in the verses, growls in the chorus, and a combination of lyrics in English, Hindi, and Punjabi (a language spoken in the Punjani region of India and Pakistan), which is exactly what makes it a fun album. I think the production overall is not bad, but I have a very hard time hearing the bass and it's a bit lacking because in my opinion bass is a very important part of the song. I have no doubt that every song on this album was written and performed with great passion and you can hear it from both vocalists. The songs are catchy and the album is just flowing and very fun to listen to. The album has a total of ten songs, of which three singles " Gaddaar ", " Aaj " and " Dana Dan " have been released and it's a bit of a shame, because it's the kind of album you just want to hear more of. I think there is not a single weak song on this album. All the songs maintain a high level and make sure that the listener stays at the same level of interest and ecstasy. Upon its release, "Rakshak" entered the American Billboard charts, making "Bloodywood" the first Indian metal band to reach this status. In conclusion, the members from India prove that hard work, passion, and perseverance (Karan resigned from his job as a lawyer) gave birth to one of the best nu-metal/folk-metal albums of 2022 and further show that the nu-metal genre can still innovate and interest especially if combined with other motifs. You do not have to understand Hindi to enjoy the album, so I highly recommend everyone to listen to it. - John Lennon - Rock 'n' Roll
Written By: Moti Kupfer Release date - 17.02.1975 This isn’t youthful energy driving his vocal performances here, nor any kind of technological innovation. It’s simply a love of rock and roll, combined with the desire not to get sued... At the end of 1973, John Lennon’s life was surrounded by a huge question mark. The brilliant musician and songwriter was in crisis in his relationship with his wife, Yoko Ono. Ono, who was the stronger and more dominant, not to say controlling, of the two, felt she was losing John. So she did as the saying goes: “If you love somebody, set them free.” Ono did not just let him go. She connected Lennon with their personal assistant and confidante, May Pang. She hoped that by allowing her husband a brief affair with a woman of her choosing, she would eventually get him back into her arms. Yoko did not expect Lennon and Pang to leave for Los Angeles, nor could she foresee how a single weekend would turn into a period of about a year and a half. Lennon had every reason to escape to Los Angeles. In 1969, he composed “Come Together” for the album “Abbey Road” by “The Beatles”. The song was inspired by the melody of “You Can’t Catch Me” by Chuck Berry, who had been one of the greatest influences on “The Beatles”. John once said that when he listen a caliber like Chuck Berry he just fall apart and have no other interest in life. As for Lennon: “If rock and roll is dead, I don't want to be around.” Publisher Morris Levy filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Lennon, and the court hearing in New York was scheduled to begin in December 1973. So Lennon fled to Los Angeles, effectively killing two birds with one stone from his perspective. Eventually, Lennon was forced to reach a settlement with the publishing company, agreeing to record three of their songs. This would mark the beginning of Lennon’s chaotic journey across Los Angeles on the way to recording his album “Rock ’n’ Roll”, released on February 17, 1975. Lennon, who was living a life of excess and heavy drinking in Los Angeles, made a critical mistake when he decided to go with Phil Spector, fondly remembered from the days of “The Beatles” and his legendary “Wall of Sound.” But sometimes more is simply too much. As the project progressed, Spector kept adding more musicians and backing vocalists. The sessions spiraled out of control when he fired a gun in the studio, poured whiskey over the mixing console, and ultimately staged a car accident, disappearing with the tapes and effectively shelving the project he had been recording with Lennon. The film “Sliding Doors” is built around the eternal question we all ask ourselves: what would have happened if we had chosen differently? Lennon, much like in that film, was given another chance to re-record the 1950s covers album he had longed to make. This time he adopted a “less is more” approach. He wanted the musicians to stay as close as possible to the original arrangements of the songs, with the exception of “Do You Wanna Dance?”. The mixing and editing continued until mid-November. To ensure progress was being made, Lennon gave Levy a demo tape of the recordings so far. Levy took the material and created his own unauthorized version of the album titled “Roots: John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits.” In response, Lennon and Capitol quickly released the official version of “Rock ’n’ Roll” to neutralize sales of Levy’s album. Lennon initially planned to use some of his childhood drawings for the album cover. Ultimately, however, he chose a photograph taken by Jürgen Vollmer, an old friend of “The Beatles” from their Hamburg days. Vollmer had photographed the band during their early years in the German port city. In March 1975, Lennon filmed promotional clips for “Slippin’ and Slidin’” and “Stand By Me” for the BBC television program “The Old Grey Whistle Test.” They were recorded at “Record Plant East” in New York. On April 18, 1975, Lennon performed “Slippin’ and Slidin’,” along with “Stand By Me” and “Imagine,” for the television special “Salute to Lew Grade.” It would become his final public performance. - AC/DC - High Voltage
A Sneak Peek... On February 17, 1975, the electrifying rock 'n' roll from Australia began to flow at a high voltage!!! So if you did not yet understand, today in 1975, the debut album of "AC/DC", "High Voltage", was released. Although this album was only released in Australia, it has its historical importance as the first musical work of this great band. A year later the band's debut album will be released internationally, also named " High Voltage ", but it will include mostly songs from the band's second album "T.N.T.", which was also released only in Australia, plus only two songs from the debut album "High Voltage" the theme our review. So true, in this aforementioned debut album "AC/DC" has not yet formulated the sound that will characterize it, but you can still hear the band's DNA buds here. In November 1973, guitarist brothers Malcolm Young and Angus Young formed "AC/DC". They enlisted bassist Larry Van Kriedt, vocalist Dave Evans and drummer Colin Burgess, and began working on material for the first album. However, the Young brothers soon realized that lead singer Evans was not right for them. They were looking for a rough and "biting" voice and Evans did not have it. Although the band managed to record one single with Evans, Van Kriedt, and Burgess - " Can I Sit Next To You, Girl ", as early as September 1974 singer Bon Scott , a friend of producer George Young (brother of Malcolm and Angus), was already recruited. Bon Scott had a very similar past to that of the Young Brothers. He too was born in Scotland, before emigrating to Australia as a child, he also loved rock and roll, so he immediately fitted in with the band. Scott's joining the band redefined not only their sound but also their whole attitude. In November 1974 the band entered Albert Studios in Sydney, Australia, to record the album. Beyond the core of the Young brothers and Bon Scott, the band's lineup has not yet been formed. The drums were played by Tony Currenti who played most of the songs and Peter Clack who played one song. Rob Bailey was in charge of bass, but Malcolm and Angus' brother - George Young replaced him in parts of the songs. Drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Mark Evans, who will complete the lineup and accompany them on the next four albums, will only join the band on the next album released in Australia "T.N.T." The album was produced by George Young and Harry Vanda . George and Harry were members of the band "Easybeats", and were a pair of its lead songwriters, including writing their biggest hit "Friday on My Mind". The importance of this album is not in its material, but in the fact that it is the first musical document of one of the greatest and best-selling bands in the history of rock 'n' roll. - King Diamond - Fatal Portrait
On February 17, 1986, King Diamond released their excellent debut album "Fatal Portrait". " King Diamond " emerged in 1985 from the ashes of the band "Mercyful Fate". After the release of the excellent album " Don't Break the Oath ", "Mercyful Fate" went on a US tour, during which the band members began to discuss the band's future. Guitarist Hank Shermann sought to pull the band in a more commercial direction, while singer and keyboardist King Diamond Wanted to continue on the same line as the previous album and even radicalize it towards more complex music. This led to the disbandment of "Mercyful Fate", in April 1985. It was right at the height of their success and it left the metal world in complete shock. "Mercyful Fate" was one of the first wave bands of the "Black Metal" genre and was a great inspiration not only for young bands from the specific genre, but also for the Thrash Metal bands like "Metallica" and "Exodus", so the breakup that came precisely when the band's career was on the rise, was a complete surprise. After the breakup, King Diamond took guitarist Michael Denner and bassist Timi Hansen with him. He adds two new musicians to the new lineup, drummer Mikkey Dee (who will later join "Motörhead" and is now part of "Scorpions") and guitarist Andy LaRocque. King Diamond wasted no time and immediately after assembling the band, he began working with them on material for the new album. Meanwhile, the band released on Christmas of 1985 a single called " No Presents for Christmas ", which was not included on the original album. This debut album illustrates the change that King Diamond intended to lead "Mercyful Fate" into. Diamond wrote all the songs on the album exclusively, except for three tracks written in collaboration with guitarist Michael Denner. He has concocted a "creepy" concept story, which dominates more than half of the album's tracks. The keyboards and synthesizers have been given a more dominant place to create the dark and frightening atmosphere that accompanies the story, with Diamond combining the songs with recited short tracks that complete the fabric of the plot. Diamond will perfect this formula in future albums, most of which will be full concept albums, so it can be said that in a sense, this album is a kind of bridge between "Mercyful Fate" and King Diamond 's sequels like "Abigail". The name of the album comes from the book "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, where he used the phrase "Fatal Portrait" several times. King Diamond 's horror story is told through six of the album's nine tracks: the four songs that fill the first side of the album: " The Candle ", " The Jonah ", " The Portrait ", " Dressed in White ", as well as the two ending tracks of the album: The instrumental " Voices From the Past " and " Haunted ". At the center of the plot is a man who unleashes the haunted spirit of a little girl named Molly, imprisoned in every candle found in a haunted house. The same man who is also the storyteller (Diamond) sees a girl's face "in every candle he burns" (" The Candle "). And the girl always talks to him and says one word (" The Jonah "). He realizes that the girl in the white dress has a story she cannot tell (" Dressed in White "). He finds an old book, he reads from it a spell that frees the spirit of Molly from the candle. Molly tells the protagonist her story, which took place seven years earlier (" The Portrait "). Jane, Molly's jealous mother imprisoned her daughter in the attic, until the daughter died. Out of longing for her daughter, Jane drew her portrait and placed it over the fireplace in the house, so that Molly would become immortal. However, Molly, whose spirit prevailed at home, managed to get the portrait to talk to her mother, so that Jane would know about the pain she was causing her. Following this, Jane burns the portrait, but then Molly's ghost returns to haunt her until she goes crazy (" Haunted "). Musically, the album gives us exactly what we were used to getting from "Merciful Fate" but with a little twist. Diamond's voice is the anchor on which the two lineups are based on. There is no sound like that in Metal and we doubt if it exists in the music world in general. A combination of Rob Halford -style falsetto screams, with an operatic voice, a vocal signature that simply cannot be missed. In terms of guitars, too, there is a direct continuation of what we got at "Merciful Faith". The successful formula of the twin guitar sound, and the exchange of solos and riffs we got in the previous lineup, are well applied here as well. So what is different after all? First and as we mentioned above, the dominance of the synthesizers and keyboards, which are used to create the atmosphere on which the story of the act is based. Second, the special emphasis on the melody is both in King Diamond 's singing and in the solos of new acquisition Andy LaRocque, whose playing in some of the songs is on the border of neo-classical. King Diamond 's music and voice blend well with the story of the act and even complement it. " The Candle " gets us into the story just like in the soundtrack of a horror movie. The sounds of the church organ, the screams in the background, and the devilish voice of King Diamond leave no room for doubt, this album is going to shake us. Then, at 1:38, comes the entrance at a fast pace and King Diamond 's voice merges with the guitars and that's it, we're already trapped within the story plot, trapped in the musical madness. Diamond's singing here is another tool designed to convey and illustrate the story to the listener, just as if it were a film. A crazy combination of singing, speaking, reciting, screaming, wicked laughter, and operatic voice blend into the dynamics of the horror story. Immediately afterward we get " The Jonah ", which also begins with the sounds of creepy keyboards and recitation that blends in with the story of the act, and here already comes a Doom riff similar to "Black Sabbath", accompanied by Diamond's vocals attacking us from every direction. Diamond's singing here is very melodic and the combination of the two guitars is perfect. Like the previous two tracks " The Portrait " also starts with the atmospheric "carpet" of keyboards, but here the song explodes at a fast pace, maybe the fastest on the album, with amazing guitar riffs and solos by Andy and Michael and crazy bass work by Timi Hansen. " Dressed in White " seals the first side of the vinyl with a melodic-bombastic atmosphere. Diamond's singing here is amazing. He changes his voice and manages to match it to the plot story. And listen to the unique guitar collaboration between Andy and Michael, especially starting at 1:46, which reminds us of the collaboration of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith from "Iron Maiden". The other side of the album opens up with an excellent 3 songs: " Charon ", " Lurking In The Dark " and " Halloween ", which are closer in musical style to the mother band, "Merciful Fate", probably because they are not part of the concept plot. These three songs are powerful and sweeping, and we really have no problem with them interrupting the story sequence. Immediately after them, we come to the instrumental track " Voices from the Past " which is a kind of introduction to the closing song " Haunted ". The two tracks complement each other and blend in with the plot story which culminates with " Voices from the Past " which Jane hears and which finally drives her mad at the epic end of " Haunted ". "Fatal Portrait" is a great opening shot for King Diamond 's glorious solo career. It has all the elements that will be upgraded and refined in subsequent albums like "Abigail" and "Them". - Ratt - Out of the Cellar
Written By: Moti Kupfer Release date - 17.02.1984 “Livin’ in L.A. is so much-a . . . fffuuuun!” The 1980s. Los Angeles. The Sunset Strip was the place to be if you wanted to soak in a wild, euphoric atmosphere packed with rock bands, especially glam rock. As the saying goes, it was “music from a time when men were so masculine they weren’t afraid to look feminine.” Of course, the metalheads of the eighties did not invent the wheel. Just ask Jim Morrison and his The Doors, who became the house band at Whisky a Go Go. And no, we are not talking about the pub in Tel Aviv, but its legendary namesake on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Even Led Zeppelin made sure to build and strengthen their reputation on the Sunset Strip long before that eighties scene exploded. Alongside the music came darker moments. There were ugly power dynamics between male rock stars who looked like women and the devoted groupies who followed them everywhere. And of course, there were the addictions. "Mötley Crüe" frontman Vince Neil described it best: “We would get drunk, do insane amounts of cocaine, and walk around in stiletto heels, stumbling everywhere. The Sunset Strip was our sewer." If we set aside, just for a moment, all the debauchery, the drinking and the addictions, and focus purely on the music, we discover a golden era for several American rock and glam metal bands. "Faster Pussycat", "L.A. Guns", "Poison", "Guns N' Roses", "W.A.S.P"., "Mötley Crüe", and their close friends "Ratt", whose debut album “Out of the Cellar” was released on February 17, 1984. The origins of “Ratt” actually trace back to the mid-seventies, when the band originally formed under the name “Mickey Ratt”, a tongue in cheek play on Mickey Mouse. In 1973, Stephen Pearcy, later known as the frontman of “Ratt”, formed a short lived band called “Firedome”, which dissolved about a year later. Undeterred, Pearcy returned in 1974 with a new group named “Crystal Pystal”. The name eventually evolved into “Mickey Ratt” and was later shortened simply to “Ratt”. Pearcy, born in July 1956 in Long Beach, California, did not initially dream of rock stardom. As a teenager he aspired to become a gas station attendant for race car drivers. At fourteen, however, he was involved in a hit and run accident while riding his bicycle. Recovery took months, and during his hospital stay a visitor gave him the item that would change his life forever, an acoustic guitar. After leaving the hospital, Pearcy devoted himself to music. Nearly a decade later, he attended a show by Van Halen at Whisky a Go Go, a performance that convinced him to relocate “Ratt” from San Diego to the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. In the heart of the exploding glam metal scene, Pearcy found the lineup that would define the band’s ascent. Cuban born bassist Juan Croucier, guitar virtuosos Warren DeMartini and Robbin Crosby, and drummer Bobby Blotzer all joined between 1981 and 1982. DeMartini was only eighteen when he joined. At the time he was studying at college in San Diego and hesitated to drop out for a band that had achieved only limited success. Guitarist Mark Torien briefly replaced him before DeMartini returned in time to record the band’s first EP later in 1982. The EP was a significant success, reportedly selling around one hundred thousand copies independently. The band subsequently signed with Time Coast Music, managed by Marshall Berle, nephew of Jewish American comedian Milton Berle, who would later appear in two of “Ratt’s” music videos thanks to that family connection. “Ratt’s” popularity continued to grow, eventually leading to a contract with Atlantic Records. The band immediately began recording their debut album. The songs on “Out of the Cellar” flow in a lively, groove driven hard rock style, carried by Stephen Pearcy’s blues tinged, raw vocal delivery and the powerful twin guitar attack of DeMartini and Crosby. “Back for More” , written by Pearcy and Crosby, tells the story of a woman who repeatedly returns to a toxic relationship with her upper class boyfriend despite his disrespectful treatment. The song originally appeared on the earlier EP. The music video featured Crosby’s then girlfriend, Tawny Kitaen, who also appears on the album cover. Kitaen would later become widely known for her appearance in "Whitesnake’s" hit “Here I Go Again”, at the time when she was romantically involved with David Coverdale . The band’s signature “Ratt ’n’ Roll”, as they liked to call their sound, is also fully realized on “Wanted Man” , a song reportedly written in an abandoned building around the romanticized idea that everyone wants to be a cowboy. And then there is the massive hit “Round and Round” , essentially the band’s own autobiography, as Pearcy declares: “Out on the streets, that's where we'll meet…” The album soared commercially, eventually selling approximately three million copies in the United States alone. - Billie Joe Armstrong
Punk rock is part of his DNA, he eats, drinks, and breathes punk rock with all his organs... So we brought some "punk" facts about Billie Joe Armstrong !! (Photo: Jonathan Weiner) 1. When he was only five years old he recorded his first song called "Look For Love" with the help of a teacher at the school where he studied. 2. At the age of 10 his mother Ollie Jackson bought him his first guitar, a replica of Fernandes Stratocaster named Blue and Bille goes on stage with it at all "Green Day" shows. (Photo: Tim Mosenfelder) 3. Bille and bassist Mike Dirnt are childhood friends since fifth grade. 4. Bille's first appearance was with "Green Day's" first incarnation, "Sweet Children" and it was thanks to Bille's mother who worked as a waitress at Rod's Hickory Pit Bar where the band performed in front of 30 people on October 17, 1987. 5. Bille experiences a moment of enlightenment about the music he wants to make while watching a confrontation show between two bands on MTV. One was the pop-punk band "The Primitives" with their hit "Crash" and the other he does not remember at all. He just remembers being furious that "The Primitives" lost and came in second. So he decided he was not going to do anything but Punk Music! (Photo: Chapman Baehler) 6. Billie wrote the song "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" in 1993, after his girlfriend, Amanda left him and moved to Ecuador. It was meant for the album " Dookie " but did not make it in because it did not fit the music style of the album. The band released it three years later on their fifth album " Nimrod " and the song became a dizzying success. 7. "Green Day" did not do any promotional work for the " Dookie " album, other than just one interview it agreed to hold with the mainstream Spin magazine. After the magazine came out with the article on the album, Bille took the magazine and burned it in front of the fans at the band's performance in Chicago. 8. Bille voiced the character of "Face" in the animated series "King Of The Hill" who was a member of a local band while his other two bandmates dubbed the other two band members in the series. 9. On his 30th birthday, Bille received as a gift from one of his friends a toilet on which were pasted the logos of the most hated bands by Billie like: Creed, P.O.D., and Nickelback. 10. Following the band's seventh album "American Idiot" released in 2004, a Broadway musical was created that was even more successful than the album when it won two prestigious Tony Awards. Bille also participated several times as a lead actor in the play in 2010 and 2011 11. Bille has been suffering from alcohol addiction since about 1997 when in 2012 he experienced a bizarre breakdown on stage during a "Green Day" show. After the incident, he decided he needed help and went into rehab. The band canceled their entire tour that year and in early 2013. 12. In high school Bille got the nickname "Two Dollar Bill" because he sold marijuana cigarettes for $2, hence the name of the band "Green Day" which meant a day when you do nothing but smoke marijuana. 13. The song "Wake Me Up When September Ends" from the album "American Idiot" was written in memory of Bille's father who died of cancer in September 1982 when Bille was 10 years old. 14. In one of the interviews Bille was asked why he left school at such an early age so he replied: "School is practice for the future, and practice makes perfect, and nobody's perfect, so why practice?" 15. If Bille had been given the opportunity to play a character in cinema he would have chosen the character of Austin Powers. (Photo: Austin Powers) 16. In 1995 Bille completely undressed during a performance in Milwaukee and was arrested by the police as a result. 17. When he was little he dreamed of being a football team coach. 18. He owns a second-hand guitar shop called Broken Guitars located in Oakland, California. 19. He has a 1963 Ford Falcon that he disassembled, repaired, and reassembled. (Photo: classicautomall) 20. Bille has released 14 albums with "Green Day", four albums with "Pinhead Gunpowder", one album with "The Network", one album with "Foxboro Hot Tub"s, one album with "Norah Jones" and produced/played with four other ensembles: SWMRS, The Boo, The Shrives, and The Longshot. 21. During his quarantine due to COVID-19 in 2020 he released an album which was a compilation album of cover songs. The project consists of 14 cover songs as part of the "No Fun Mondays" series of songs, in which Armstrong released a cover song onto the "Green Day" YouTube channel every so often usually on a Monday as the title suggests. So let's listen to the last thing Bille put out under his wing... - Simon & Garfunkel - The Concert in Central Park
A Sneak Peek... On September 19, 1981, a historic reunion of the Simon & Garfunkel duo was held for a one-time free performance in Central Park of New York. Despite their dizzying success, the combination of stellar voices and iconic harmonies Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel failed to survive beyond their fifth album " Bridge over Troubled Water ", released in 1969. Precisely at their peak of success and their best creative period the two barely managed to communicate and It was hard and painful. Neither the short reunions between the two over the years, as in the 1975 song "My Little Town," nor the fact that they were featured on each other's albums, has failed to yield a full reunion. But when New York City (where they were both born), appealed to them to unite to raise money for the renovation of the deteriorating Central Park, the two decided to put aside their differences and contribute to the public cause. The show gathered a huge amount of spectators, about 500,000 people, into Central Park. The stage was designed to look like the rooftops of New York City's skyscrapers and the duo was accompanied by seven musicians who performed 21 of the duo's songs as well as several songs from their solo careers, only 17 of which entered the double live album. (https://www.rollingstone.fr) Simon and Garfunkel's performance was praised by music critics. On February 16, 1982, the double album "The Concert in Central Park" was released and was a huge commercial success, reaching number six on the Billboard 200 album chart and selling over two million copies in the United States alone.
