Queen - "We Are The Champions" Tops Sing-Along Study
What is the catchiest song in the world? The one that gets stuck in your head more than any other song?
On October 3, 2011, Europa Press reported that the song "We Are The Champions" by "Queen", from their album "News of the World" topped a ranking of songs that encouraged audiences to sing along. Reports had already appeared on September 29 and 30; October 3 is the date of the agency report, not the first publication of the research.
For the study, Alisun Pawley and Daniel Müllensiefen collected data on 1,054 song events over 30 nights at five venues in northern England. The analysis of musical features used a subset of 332 events. "We Are The Champions" topped the sing-along ranking in the sample; this was not a universal finding that it was the catchiest song ever written. The research was presented at a conference on July 30, 2011, and the full paper was published in Music Perception in 2012.
The contenders for the crown were the songs: Y.M.C.A of "Village People", "The Final Countdown" of "Europe" and "Fat Lip" of "Sum 41".
