  • AC/DC's First Live Performance 31.12.1973

On December 31, 1973, "AC/DC" took the stage for the first time. (Photo: Philip Morris) The show was held at a small club called "Checkers Nightclub", in Sydney, Australia. The club hosts 550 people. It was the most famous nightclub in the city, which was established in 1953 and at that time was also known internationally and hosted artists from all over the globe. In November 1973, brothers Angus Young and Malcolm Young formed "AC/DC" and enlisted bassist Larry Van Kriedt, lead singer Dave Evans and drummer Colin Burgess to complete the lineup. The band's name was chosen by Angus and Malcolm after their sister Margaret saw the words "AC/DC" embedded in a sewing machine. In fact, two performances of the band were held that evening. The band played two different sets into the small hours of New Year's Eve. The band's singer at the time, Dave Evans, said he could not think of a better way to make it through the band's first live performance ever. The crowd was full of alcohol and completely insane and the electricity was flowing through the air literally. The songs the band played that evening were a combination of cover versions by artists like "The Beatles", "The Rolling Stones" and Chuck Berry and initial versions of the songs that would appear on the band's first two albums, which would be released a year later, after Evans left and was replaced, Bon Scott . Evans recorded with "AC/DC" two of the songs played that evening. "Can I Set Next To You Girl" which was the band's first single and its b-side "Rockin' In The Parlor". The album was a very successful comeback album for Harrison, and Lynne participated in writing three songs from it and playing guitars, bass, keyboards, and singing background vocals. The album featured successful singles such as "Got My Mind Set on You", "When We Was Fab" and "This Is Love". 19. This is not Lynne's only collaboration with Harrison. He will also produce Harrison 's last album - "Brainwashed" from 2002, which was released a year after Harrison's death. Lynne produced and completed playing several instruments on the album per instructions he had received from George Harrison before his death. 20. This Lynne's close work with George Harrison will lead to the formation of the supergroup "Traveling Wilbury", which will include Harrison, Lynne, Bob Dylan , Tom Petty , and Roy Orbison. Lynne will release two albums with the band. "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1" in 1988 and "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3" in 1990. 21. • Dexter Holland

He's one of the people responsible for bringing Punk Rock back to the mainstream in the mid-1990s but that's not why he's attained the 'Doctor' title !! (Photo: Daveed Benito) = His complete name is Bryan Keith "Dexter" Holland, or more formally known as "Dr. Dexter Holland," born on December 29, 1965, in California, USA. = Having earned the distinction of a "Valedictorian" degree, an internationally recognized high school diploma for exceptional achievement, Holland excelled in mathematics during his high school years. Interestingly, he drew parallels between his proficiency in mathematics and Punk Rock music, which might seem eccentric. = Upon completing high school in 1983, Holland, serving as the drummer, co-founded the band "Manic Subsidal" with his bassist friend Greg Kriesel. Although they played together in the garage, the project did not progress beyond that stage until... = In 1986, following various changes in the band's lineup, with Greg maintaining the bass position, Holland transitioned to become the lead singer and guitarist. Guitarist Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman joined the band, and drummer James Lilja, later replaced by Ron Welty, also became part of the ensemble. Consequently, the band adopted the name "The Offspring" and recorded its inaugural single, "I'll Be Waiting." = The single was released under the band's independent label, "Black Label," named after a beloved beer they frequently indulged in. (Photo: NME) = Concurrent with the band's early formation, Holland pursued his education. Post-high school, he enrolled at the University of Southern California, culminating in the attainment of both a bachelor's and master's degree in science, specializing in molecular biology. = Following the recording of additional demos, the band secured a record deal with the small label Nemesis Records. Collaborating with producer Thom Wilson, they unveiled their eponymous debut album in 1989, though its release was limited and lacked significant exposure. The album not only failed to make an impact but also required two and a half years to sell the entire 5,000 copies produced. = By 1991, the band inked a deal with the independent label Epitaph Records, releasing their second album, "Ignition," in 1992, also under the production of Thom Wilson. = In 1994, the band achieved a monumental breakthrough with their third album, "Smash," marking their most extensive and highest-selling record to date. Initially lacking significant exposure, the album gained traction when the renowned radio station KROQ began airing the first single, "Come Out and Play." The single swiftly ascended various Billboard charts, propelling the album to the pinnacle of success. "Smash" went on to become an all-time best-selling album distributed by an independent record company, surpassing 20 million copies sold. = The creation of the song "Come Out and Play" by Holland was spurred by the 1992 Los Angeles riots, drawing inspiration from the clashes among gangs. His personal experiences, particularly driving through the Compton and Watts neighborhoods in his less-than-ideal car while commuting to university, also influenced the song's narrative. = In conjunction with Green Day's "Dookie" album, both bands propelled Punk Rock back into the mainstream, establishing themselves as the pinnacle of musical success globally. = Between 1994 and 1995, the band embarked on a worldwide tour, transitioning from being an opening act to headlining their own shows. As the tour progressed, the band moved from performing in small bars and clubs to larger venues, including theaters and arenas. = In 1995, Holland, along with Greg, co-founded Nitro Records. They re-released the band's debut album and began signing new Punk Rock acts such as Jughead's Revenge and AFI. = The year 1996 saw the release of their fourth album, "Ixnay on the Hombre," after signing with Columbia Records. While the album performed well, it did not match the success of its predecessor. = In 1998, the band launched their fifth album, "Americana," featuring hit singles "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)," "Why Don't You Get a Job?" and "The Kids Aren't Alright." These singles dominated charts in the US and globally, propelling the album to become the band's most successful in their career. = The band continued its discography with five additional albums: "Conspiracy of One" (2000), "Splinter" (2003), "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace" (2008), "Days Go By" (2012), and the latest, "Let the Bad Times Roll," released in 2021—nine years after the preceding album. Notably, the album, produced by the renowned Bob Rock, garnered mixed reviews. = Throughout the band's enduring career, Bryan Holland and Kevin Wasserman stand as the sole consistent members, while the remaining lineup has undergone changes over the years. (Photo: Daveed Benito) = In 2004, Bryan Holland introduced a hot sauce named "Gringo Bandito." Mexican cuisine held significant importance in his life, and his penchant for adding spicy sauce to his meals prompted him to explore and appreciate various sauce types. Intrigued by individuals who carried their preferred sauce everywhere, Holland conceptualized and launched Gringo Bandito. The sauce has achieved remarkable success, selling millions of units and securing a spot on the menus of over 500 restaurants across the United States. Additionally, it is available for purchase on platforms like Amazon. = Holland holds a pilot certification and possesses a private jet whimsically named "Anarchy Airline." Notably, in 2004, he undertook a global flight, circumnavigating the world in a remarkable 10 days. = In 2017, Holland successfully concluded his doctoral studies, earning a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Over the past decade, he has expressed on multiple occasions his preference for a career as a university professor rather than continuing in the music industry. (Photo: Daveed Benito) = In 2013 Holland participated in the publication of an article in the public science library PLoS, which deals with MicroRNA in the genome of HIV. Do not try to understand, it is complicated, just note that the article was very influential and helped develop treatments for AIDS. = After the band's fifth album "Let the Bad Times Roll" (2021), which was released nine years after the previous album, it continues its renewed journey and releases a sixth album in 2024 called "Supercharged". This album was also produced by Bob Rock, but it was not really successful and did not even enter the Billboard 200 chart. • Steve Winwood - Arc of a Diver

Written By: Moti Kupfer Release date - 29.12.1980  "Networking is rubbish, better have friends instead" It is not certain that Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk would sign off on this idea with their eyes closed, but there is something compelling in Winwood’s view of history. He once argued that music did not dictate the course of the 1960s, but rather emerged as a byproduct of the profound social and cultural changes of that era. Winwood was born in 1948 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England. His father, Lawrence, worked as a foundryman but was also a semi-professional musician who played saxophone and clarinet. By the age of four, young Steve was already learning piano. Soon after, he added drums and guitar to his skills and sang as a choirboy at St. John’s Church. At just eight years old, he began performing with the "Ron Atkinson Band" alongside his father and older brother. While studying at Great Barr School, he became immersed in Birmingham’s rock and blues scene, playing Hammond organ with visiting blues legends such as B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker. At fourteen, Winwood joined the blues-rock band "Spencer Davis Group". His high, soulful tenor voice quickly drew comparisons to Ray Charles. After four years and three albums, he left the group, having earned enough from its hit singles to buy his own Hammond organ. In April 1967, he formed "Traffic", a band that released seven studio albums in seven years (with an eighth and final album arriving in 1994). Along the way, Winwood also took part in the short-lived supergroup " Blind Faith " , alongside Rick Grech, Eric Clapton , and Ginger Baker . After Clapton’s departure, Winwood continued working with the remaining members under the name "Ginger Baker's Air Force". About a year and a half before launching his solo career, he also formed the jazz-fusion rock project "Go" with Japanese keyboardist Stomu Yamashta and Santana drummer Michael Shrieve. Winwood’s creativity was not confined to his own bands. He appeared as a session musician on albums by Jimi Hendrix , Joe Cocker , Howlin' Wolf, Lou Reed , Robert Palmer, and Sandy Denny, to name only a few. Following pressure from Island Records, Winwood released his self-titled debut album in 1977. Around that time, he built his own recording studio, “Netherturkdonic,” on his farm in Gloucestershire. There, he wrote and recorded music while playing keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion himself. It was in this studio that “Arc of a Diver”  was created. Often categorized as soft rock, the album contains only seven tracks. With the exception of “Second-Hand Woman” , each song stretches between five and eight minutes, allowing the arrangements to breathe and evolve. Winwood co-wrote some of the lyrics with American lyricist Will Jennings, who would later write “Tears in Heaven” and “My Heart Will Go On”. As the 1980s approached, Winwood realized that his familiar Hammond-driven sound needed a subtle update. Synthesizers and electric keyboards were introduced to add a new twist, though the Hammond organ remained an essential presence. The opening track, “While You See a Chance” , became the album’s only single and reached number seven on the Billboard chart. The album itself was also a commercial success in the United States, peaking at number three on the album chart and selling over one million copies. Its cover artwork was created by British artist Tony Wright, inspired by the cover of Jazz by French painter and sculptor Henri Matisse. • Berry Sakharof - Signs of Weakness

On December 28, 1993, Berry Sakharof released his second solo album "Signs of Weakness", one of the best and most influential Israeli rock albums of all time !! Yes, yes, we did not exaggerate. This is a milestone in Israeli Rock. An album that may have been hard to digest in real time, but today there is already a consensus about it. An album that, although was not commercially successful and did not include "hits" that blow the charts, its impact on artists and songwriters resonates to this day. Similar to "Puzi" by Arik Einstein in the 60s, "End of the Orange Season" by "Tammuz" in the 70s and "White Wedding" by Shalom Hanoch in the 80s, "Signs of Weakness" created, in our opinion, a musical revolution in the Israeli rock of the 90s. But before this revolution became public, it was first and foremost Berry's personal revolution. Although this is his second solo album, it can be said that this is actually his first solo. This is the album in which Berry left the nest shared with his old friend Rami Fortis , who accompanied, advised, and even participated in writing and performing the first solo album - " All or Nothing ". It's the first album in which most of the lyrics were written by Berry himself (some in collaboration with Dan Toren). An album where he would get to do whatever he wanted. No rules or dictates, no sticking to formulas, no trying to please anyone or think what is expected of him. Just like " Achtung Baby " for "U2", "Signs of Weakness" created Berry's personal musical revolution and we find a lot of similarities between the two. The initial shock from The Edge 's moaning guitar sound at the opening of "Zoo Station" was not much different from that of Berry's "sawing" guitar in the first few seconds of " Kama Yossi ". The sound of Larry Mullen's industrial drums, Jr. was not really far from those of Rea Mochiach and Bono 's distorted sound was replaced here by distorted and sampled sounds that only further emphasized the musical upheaval. The resemblance to " Achtung Baby " is not limited to that, The Edge said that before and during the creation of " Achtung Baby " he listened to Electronic music and Industrial Rock, which greatly influenced the creative process. Berry, on the other hand, was not far away from that. In the first season of Channel 8 "Albums" TV series, Berry noted that he was greatly influenced by the Electronic Dance wave that began at the time. He said the samplers added a new color to the music and the electronic world intrigued him. From there, the road was really short for the "musical upheaval" of Berry, which later will also produce waves that would sweep away more artists. "Signs of Weakness" is Sakharof's first joint work with Rea Mochiach, which will continue to collaborate with Berry in the future. It is indeed Berry's album, a very personal album in which he was free to create and develop musically and creatively. But Rea Mochiach was a catalyst that contributed greatly to the end result. He was a partner in composing, playing, and integrating elements of electronic music and samples into the songs, this was very Innovative in Israeli music. Sakharof's and Mochiach collaboration produced a groundbreaking album that featured a very unique sound for the period, an album that combined rock and electronics, analog with digital, and prismatic guitars with electronic sound. This album included songs that became "classics" in Berry's repertoire and are an integral part of his setlists, such as: " Kama Yossi " written about Berry's growing up experience in the "Ramat Yosef" neighborhood in Bat Yam and included samples by Ray Charles, " White Noise " which included samples from the song "Thousands Are Sailing" of "The Pogues". Alongside them, you can find excellent songs like: " Hallucinations " (" Hazaiot ") whose drum sound at the opening threw us straight to his mother band "Minimal Compact". " Too Bad You Are Not " (" Chaval Sheat Lo ") whose lyrics include the name of the album ("Signs of Weakness") and whose guitars in its first seconds reminded us a bit of "Sonic Youth". " Naftali the Fish " whose oriental violins sound will serve as a basis for Berry's masterpieces that included distinct "oriental" motifs, such as " Whole Heart " (" Lev Shalem ") from the album " Touches " and later also for a full sample in the song " Monsoon " from "The Other" album, taken from "Naghm Fe Hayati" by Farid al-Atrash. " Moments " (" Regaim ") with the nervous drum machine, the mesmerizing " Deep in the Whipped Cream " (" Amok BaKatzefet ") with the dominant bass of Oded Schechter, and more. Although in the years after its release, "Signs of Weakness" sales were weak, compared to Berry Sakharof's other albums, there is no doubt that this is one of the albums whose influence on Israeli music is immeasurably greater than its commercial success. Over the years, "Signs of Weakness" began to be considered by many as one of Sakharof's best albums and one of the best Israeli rock albums of all time. The originality, innovation, and exceptional production quality in this album is undoubtedly should be placed side by side with masterful albums in Israeli music and this is reflected in the various ranking lists, such as the broadcast magazine "Kan" which ranked it first place on the list of "The greatest Israeli Alternative Albums" or "Ynet" that ranked it 13th on the "100 Best Israeli Albums" list. • Hayley Williams

She writes she sings, she's a keyboardist and she's the frontwoman of the band "Paramore". Let's have some facts about Hayley Williams: (Photo: SARA JAYE WEISS) = She was born on December 27, 1988, in the city of Meridian, Mississippi, USA, to Hayley Nichole Williams. = She has two half-sisters. Her parents divorced in 2002 and she moved at age 13 with her mother to Franklin, Tennessee, where she met her future friends for the band "Paramore", Josh and Zack Farrow. = Immediately after moving to the city of Franklin she began taking voice lessons with Brett Manning, a vocal instructor who assisted many artists, including Miley Cyrus, Keith Urban, and Taylor Swift as Haley became a friend of the latter two. = While in school, Haley tried to get accepted into a local Punk band "The Factory", which played cover versions, and in the process, she met Jeremy Davis, who would become "Paramore's" bass player in the future. = She was discovered in 2003 by talent hunters and artistic directors Dave Steunebrink and Richard Williams who signed her to a contract at the age of 14. At the time, she was writing pop songs. (Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic) = Shortly afterward Williams was signed to Atlantic Record Company which intended to turn her into a successful pop star. Haley of course objected and insisted to form an alternative rock band. = The members of the record company approved Williams's request and so in 2004 the band "Paramore" was formed, with its members Josh Farro as a guitarist, his brother Zac Farro as a drummer, and Jeremy Davis on bass. = The group flew to Florida to record the album, but after they arrived, bassist Jeremy Davis left them. The rest of the members continued to work on the album which included songs about his departure. Even the album cover referred to his departure when Haley explained: "The empty couch on the cover of 'All We Know Is Falling' and the shadow moving away from it; 'it's all about how Jeremy left us and made us feel like there was a space between us." = The band's debut album "All We Know Is Falling" was released in 2005, when Haley was only 16. She co-wrote all the songs on the album. (Photo: Unknown) = The band released two more albums "Riot!" (2007) and "Brand New Eyes" (2009) and had great success with sold-out tours in Europe and the USA. = In 2007 the band was chosen as one of the ten bands worth following that year by the British NME magazine = That same year, Williams appeared in the "Found Me" video clip of the band "New Found Glory". = In early 2008, Haley and the band appeared on the cover of Alternative Press magazine and were voted by readers as the best band of 2007. In addition, the band was nominated for the Discovery of the Year award at the Grammy Awards but lost to singer Amy Winehouse. = That same year, the song "Decode" which she co-wrote with bandmate Josh Farro and Taylor York was included in the soundtrack to the movie "Twilight" (Twilight). = In 2009 she wrote and recorded the song "Teenagers", for the soundtrack of the movie "Jennifer's Body". = In the same year the song "Ignorance" was chosen as "the best song" by the readers of Kerrang! magazine. = At the end of 2010, the two significant members, the Farro brothers, left the band. The two left claiming that Hayley, who is the only one signed to the Atlantic label, has turned the band into a product of the label and steers the band exactly according to its dictations. Haley tried to organize and regroup the band together with Davis who managed to leave and come back several times and with Taylor York. In order to strengthen the band's image, she tattooed three pillars on her arm as a symbol of the three remaining members. = In the same year, she collaborated with rapper B.o.B on the songs "Airplanes" and "Airplanes (Part II") from his debut album. = In 2011 the song "Monster" which she wrote was included in the soundtrack of the movie "Transformers: Dark of the Moon". It was the first song the band released after the departure of Josh and Zak Farro. = In 2013 when they want to reintroduce themselves to the world, the renewed band "Paramore" releases its fourth album, which, as a sign of renewal, bears the name of the band. In this album, the band's style gets a significant change and is heavily influenced by elements of New Wave and Funk Rock. The album is a great success, reaching number one on Billboard and conquering other top charts throughout Europe. = In the same year she wrote and starred in the song "Stay the Night" by DJ and producer Zedd the client from his debut album "Clarity". (Photo: Sven-Sebastian Sajak) = In 2020, Hayley released her first solo album "Petals for Armor". The album was preceded by two EPs that contained songs included in the album. = In 2021 Hayley released her second solo album "Flowers for Vases / Descansos" = In February 2023, the band releases its sixth album, "This Is Why." This album is particularly unique and diverse, incorporating elements of pop, funk, rock, and even jazz. It appears that the band has found a new musical identity. This observation is further supported by the fact that the band has been chosen to open for Taylor Swift during part of her massive tour, The Eras Tour! = In August 2025, she released her third solo album, "Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party." She initially released 17 songs from the album as separate singles, and only a month later did she release another song and combine them all into an album. Hailey self-released the album after leaving Atlantic Records. = In September 2025, Hailey joined the global "No Music For Genocide" boycott and removed her and "Paramore" music from streaming services in Israel. = Hair is an essential part of her style. She said she tends to change color every time she goes through extreme emotional turmoil. • Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen

Written By: Moti Kupfer Release date - 27.12.1967 “My mother sang songs all around the house. I know those melodies touched me deeply. When I took my guitar to a restaurant with friends, my mother would come along, and we would sing all night.” Leonard Cohen  was never meant to be a singer. He was a poet and novelist who received critical acclaim for his books, including: "Let Us Compare Mythologies", "The Spice-Box of Earth", and "The Favourite Game". But praise and good reviews do not pay the grocery bills. So Cohen left Canada, where he was born, and moved to the United States. By a twist of fate, he became a fringe figure in Andy Warhol’s Factory scene. Warhol, who occasionally scouted promising artists and musicians from the crowd ("Velvet Underground"), heard Cohen perform " Suzanne ", a song Cohen wrote about his unfulfilled relationship with Suzanne Verdal, the partner of Canadian sculptor Armand Vaillancourt. The song was first recorded and popularized by American singer Judy Collins. Warhol brought Cohen onstage for his first performance in front of an audience, giving him the initial push he needed. Cohen went on to perform at several folk festivals, until John Hammond, a producer at Columbia Records, heard about him and signed him. From there, the path to his debut album "Songs of Leonard Cohen", released on December 27, 1967, was short. Cohen was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Westmount, Quebec, in September 1934. When he was nine years old, his father, Nathan Cohen, passed away. At fourteen, he studied music and singing at Westmount High School, where he became particularly fascinated by the poetry of Spanish poet, playwright, and director Federico García Lorca. During high school, he taught himself to play acoustic guitar and formed a country-folk band called “Buckskin Boys.” As mentioned, Hammond signed Cohen and was initially meant to take him into the recording studio, but due to illness he was replaced by John Simon, who would later produce albums for "The Band", "Blood Sweat & Tears", and the group that launched the career of Janis Joplin , "Big Brother & the Holding Company". Cohen’s intention was to record the songs in a minimalist fashion, accompanied only by guitar, relying primarily on his groundbreaking, beautiful songwriting. His lyrics avoid strict rhyme schemes and instead embrace a loose, creative structure. Throughout the album, Cohen often leads the listener to the edge of an emotional moment, touching but not quite crossing it. At times this appears in his relationship with a woman ( “Suzanne” ), at others in the story of two women travelers he hosted in his hotel room during a snowstorm in Edmonton ( “Sisters of Mercy” ), and elsewhere in the image of a man reaching his hands toward the sky as if he could touch it ( “The Stranger Song” ). Cohen also tells the story of a woman who loved him deeply, while he felt unworthy of her love ( “So Long, Marianne” ). It can be said that much of the album carries a dark, even bitter atmosphere, tinged with sadness over things that were unattainable, or almost within reach. The album appears on Colin Larkin’s All Time Top 1000 Albums list and on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. • America - America

Written By: Moti Kupfer Release date - 26.12.1971 “Just don’t buy me a rose wrapped in parchment, just don’t bring me a rose, because then I will tell the truth, the one who brings me a rose is the wrong man.” Yael Levi sang it, Tirza Atar wrote it, and Nurit Galron composed it, although, when it comes to the melody, it can be said with complete honesty that it belongs no less to Dewey Bunnell, one third of the members of America, who released their self-titled debut album on December 26, 1971. “America” was actually formed in London, when the band’s three members, Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley, all sons of U.S. Air Force personnel—met at an American Air Force base in London. Bunnell was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, to an American father and a British mother, and as a young musician he was inspired by "The Beatles" and "The Beach Boys". Gerry Beckley was born in Fort Worth, Texas, also to an American father and an English mother. He began playing piano at the age of three, and a few years later learned to play guitar. As a child, he played in a band called “The Vanguards,” which performed surf music, and after spending a summer in England he was influenced by bands of the British Invasion. Daniel Peek was born in Panama City, Florida, also the son of an Air Force serviceman, and from 1963 onward studied at a school in London. Toward the end of the 1960s, the three met with the intention of making music together. Two years earlier, “ Sgt. Pepper’s ” by "The Beatles" had been released, inspiring countless young musicians. Peek, Bunnell, and Beckley likewise envisioned a “Beatles-like” creative path, but their combined vocal harmonies ultimately steered them more toward the sound of "The Beach Boys" and "Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young". “America” was the name they chose for themselves, inspired by the jukebox in the local cafeteria, which bore the label “Americana.” Almost as a declaration: we are not British musicians trying to sound American - we are the real thing. After performing as an acoustic-guitar trio around London, they caught the attention of "Warner Bros. Records" and entered the studio with producer Ian Samwell, who had previously worked with Cliff Richard, John Mayall, and "Small Faces", along with his right-hand man, Jeff Dexter. Samwell and Dexter heard America’s acoustic guitars and understood that their direction was not the Beatles, but rather vocal harmonies and folk rock. Recording for the debut album, simply titled “America” after the band itself, began in March 1971 at "Trident Studios", which at the time was one of the few studios equipped with an eight-track tape machine. When the album was first released, it achieved only moderate success, and Ian Samwell and Jeff Dexter brought the trio back into the studio to record additional songs. Among them was a piece initially called “Desert Song,” written by Dewey Bunnell after he encountered paintings in the home of musician Arthur Brown, best known for “Fire.” One painting conveyed the feeling of a hot, dry desert, while another depicted a strange looking horse. The song was later renamed " A Horse with No Name" , a track that describes a difficult journey through the desert, all in search of a small measure of inner peace. Despite the soothing vocal harmonies and folk rock guitars that define much of the album’s sound, several songs deal directly with the Vietnam War, mainly from the personal perspective of the soldiers themselves, as heard in " Donkey Jaw" . In " Sandman" , the familiar figure of the Sandman, traditionally associated with pleasant dreams, is turned on its head. For the soldiers, sleep was anything but comforting, becoming a nightmare driven by the constant fear of falling asleep and being killed by the enemy while they rested. The second and most successful single from the album is the soft rock ballad " I Need You" , a song that was later covered numerous times and helped define the soft rock sound for generations to come, most notably influencing bands such as "Air Supply". On the album cover, the band members are seen standing at the front of the photograph alongside three of eight Native American prisoners who were held under guard in Montana during a period of conflict between Native American tribes and American settlers.
