- The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion
On May 12, 1992 "The Black Crowes" released their second album "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion". This album is is a raw, swaggering affirmation of "The Black Crowes" Southern rock identity. Following the success of their debut "Shake Your Money Maker", this album strips back commercial polish in favor of a more soulful, groove-heavy sound steeped in blues, gospel, and classic rock influences. The album takes its title from "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion", a well-known hymnal first published in 1835 by William Walker. Similar to their debut album, all the tracks of the album except one (Bob Marley's "Time Will Tell" cover), was written by brothers Chris Robinson & Rich Robinson. Right from the opening track, “Sting Me,” the band delivers a fiery statement of purpose. Rich Robinson’s riffs are fuzzier, looser, and more confident, while Chris Robinson's vocals exude a mix of grit and gospel fervor. Songs like “Remedy” and “Hotel Illness” feel like outtakes from a long-lost "Rolling Stones" session - especially the former that features Barbara Mitchell and Taj Harmon on gospel style backing vocals. One of the most compelling elements of the album is the addition of guitarist Marc Ford on lead guitar, replacing Jeff Cease, who was fired the year before. His interplay with Rich Robinson adds a layer of muscularity and texture. Meanwhile, the new addition of keyboardist Eddie Harsch brings a Southern gospel flavor that deepens the album’s rootsy vibe, especially on tracks like “Thorn in My Pride” and “Sometimes Salvation.” Despite its unapologetically retro leanings that was very different from the musical landscape at the time, which mainly relied mainly on alternative and grunge, "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" topped the Billboard 200, a testament to its broad appeal. In hindsight, it’s arguably "The Black Crowes" at their creative peak—a seamless blend of Southern rock, soul, gospel and blues with just the right amount of grit. The album set a new record by featuring four songs that hit number one on the Album Rock Tracks chart—surpassing the previous record of three, held by Tom Petty since 1989. It is not surprising then, that "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" was placed at number 477 in "Rock Hard magazine’s" book "The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time" and that "Guitar World" ranked it number 100 on its list of the top 100 guitar albums ever. - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
On May 12, 1967, the madness began ... The Power Trio's debut album "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" revealed to the world the greatest electric guitar player of all time, which will change the whole perception of guitar playing and using this amazing instrument. Jimi Hendrix's virtuoso, wild and unrestrained playing will affect anyone who wants to hold the guitar after him, leaving even colleagues (Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck) speechless, and making Pete Townshend refuse to perform after him at the Monterey Festival, and he certainly knew why, because Hendrix simply "burned" the stage (and his guitar) in a tremendous performance that left no one to go after it. It is simply inconceivable how a man who had been active for such a short period caused such a great revolution in the music world. The year is 1967 and the debut album "Are You Experienced" did not sound like anything else released at the time. The heavy and powerful sound, psychedelia combined with rock, blues, and even a hint of soul music, created a crazy mix that did not sound like anything else. Jimi Hendrix conducts this masterpiece with perfect playing technique, unfamiliar sounds, creative riffs, and unconventional feedbacks. And when Hendrix opened his mouth while playing riffs and clever guitar sentences, it was already pure genius !! "Foxy Lady", "Manic Depression", "Fire" and the songs "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", and "The Wind Cries Mary", which were released as singles before the release of the album and were only included in the American version, leave no room for doubt. This is a classic album that is also one of the best debut albums of all time. This album was the first in which the band on the cover was not designed by renowned cover designer Derek Riggs, but by designer Melvyn Grant. 12. The reason for the designer's replacement was "Maiden's" attempt to upgrade Eddie's character during the 1990s. They wanted him to look even more menacing than he had been until then. 13. Grant will later design additional "Maiden" albums, such as: "Virtual XI", "Death on the Road", "The Final Frontier" and more. 14. This is the first album where guitarist Janick Gers was a co-writer. 5 of the 12 songs on the album were co-written with him. 15. The song "From Here to Eternity" is the fourth and final part of the band's Charlotte song series, which included the songs "Charlotte the Harlot", "22 Acacia Avenue", and "Hooks In You". 20. In this episode of the saga Charlotte meets a man on a motorcycle and rides with him to the horizon.. The line "They took a spill at the devil's bend" implies that the two had an accident and died, so the Charlotte series actually died with the song. 21. The single "From Here to Eternity" is the first of the band's studio songs released as singles, in which Eddie's character does not appear. 22. The song "Afraid to Shoot Strangers" was written by Harris following the first Gulf War. It describes how governments and generals use soldiers as playthings. 23. - Whitesnake - Flesh & Blood
On May 10, 2019, "Whitesnake" released her 13th studio album "Flesh & Blood". As you already know, "Whitesnake" has long been David Coverdale's backing band. But despite this and perhaps precisely in light of this, we get the same familiar formula since the album "1987" in "Flesh & Blood", i.e., a balanced and correct dose between sharpened and catchy riffs, simple and meticulous melodies, stadium anthems and rock ballads. To the credit of Coverdale it will be said, that he is a wizard in selecting gifted guitarists who also serve as his partners in writing. He did this with John Sykes on the classic album "1987", he did it with Adrian Vandenberg on the subsequent album "Slip of the Tongue" and he collaborated with Doug Aldrich on the albums "Good to be Bad" and "Forevermore". This time Coverdale chose guitarist Joel Hoekstra who joined the band in 2014 and has since proven himself as a supreme grace player, and now also as a talented songwriter who co-wrote 6 of the 13 songs on the album, with Coverdale. Speaking of talented guitarists, it is impossible not to mention Reb Beach, who has been in the band since 2002 and whose abilities can not be argued. Beach co-wrote 5 more songs with Coverdale and also serves as a mentor, guiding the band members on how to realize Coverdale’s musical vision. There is no doubt that the Hoekstra and Beach duo complement each other and make up together what seems to be the best pair of guitarists "Whitesnake" has had in many years. Also playing in this excellent lineup is bassist Michael Devin who joined the band on the album "Forevermore", veteran drummer Tommy Aldridge, who has been with "Whitesnake" one way or another for 30 of it's more than 40 years, and keyboardist Michele Luppi, who joined the band during the "The Purple Tour" in 2015. So like we said, the album has a pretty balanced dose of heavier and more rhythmic songs like: "Trouble Is Your Middle Name", "Well I Never" and "Get Up", as opposed to slower and softer songs like: "When I Think of You (Color Me Blue)" "After All", "Heart of Stone". (Photo: Whitesnake on Twitter) Symbolically the album opens with the song "Good To See You Again", and indeed how good it is to see this band create new material for the first time, eight years after their previous studio album, "Forevermore". The album's opening song includes a strong and catchy guitar riff with a typical guitar slide and strong and powerful vocals by Coverdale. Here is the place to point out that Coverdale's voice has hardly changed and still sounds great, even from the height of his 67 years of this powerful and charismatic singer. The song "Shut Up & Kiss Me" was chosen to serve as the first single the band chose to release from the album, and the reasons for this are understandable. This song turns out to be one of the most catchy on the album. The passage section in the song sounds really familiar and after a few plays the token fell that the melody there is reminiscent of "Judas Priest's" famous riff in the song "Electric Eye". This is not the only time that tracks on the album sound like other known songs. For example, the chorus in the song "Hey You (You Make Me Rock)", which is also one of the strongest on the album, is reminiscent of the melody in Def Leppard's song "Rocket". The excellent track that closes the album "Sands Of Time" sounds like a combination of "Kashmir" and "Stargazer" with the influence of oriental motifs. It may sound strange, but these do not detract from the high writing level of this album, but rather the opposite. The references and gestures to the classic and immortal songs are always "near" and in a low dose, so that they do not sound like a copy, and therefore constitute "added value" that pushes the songs forward. The album includes 13 tracks in the regular version and 18 tracks in the deluxe version that unfolds over 82:58 minutes. The deluxe version includes 5 additional bonus tracks, including 3 mix versions of songs from the album and two more new songs, which were not included in the regular version of the record. Particularly notable is the song "Can't Do Right For Doing Wrong", an excellent blues-rock song with beautiful guitar work, which surpasses in level even some of the songs on the album itself. In conclusion, Coverdale has not recreated anything for us on this album. He's doing pretty much what he's done in 30 of the last 41 years of the band activity, but he's doing it great, and it's fun and it's good !!! The album Flesh & Blood "is a successful" comeback "of Whitesnake, after so many years without new original material. It is a classic hard rock album, containing more than one stadium anthem, which will make you hum it after listening to it for the first time. So maybe the album This one does not reach the level of the band's masterpieces, but it certainly includes enough good moments to fulfill the expectations of one of the most iconic and oldest bands in the hard rock scene. - Dire Straits - On the Night
On May 10, 1993 "Dire Straits" released its second live album "On the Night". "On the Night" captures the band's tour in support of their "On Every Street album", which included 216 shows in Europe, North America, and Australia, and sold 7.1 million tickets!!! The album was recorded in May 1992 at "Les Arenes in Nîmes", France, and at "Feijenoord Stadion" in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. "On the Night" is a worthy follow-up to the band's previous live album, "Alchemy", which was released in 1984, although it does not reach the same level of that masterpiece live album. The album mainly features the band's later hits, all performed live with the energy and enthusiasm that made "Dire Straits" one of the most popular live acts of the 80s and early 90s The set conatains four tracks from the multi-million selling "Brothers in Arms" and another four songs from "On Every Street" including their latest songles “Calling Elvis” and “Heavy Fuel”. Only two songs from the album had been part of the "Alchemy" set, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Private Investigations”, but they both do not mach the classic versions, recorded 9 years earlier. Overall, "On the Night" is a fantastic live album that captures the magic of" Dire Straits'" live shows. The band's tight musicianship, Mark Knopfler's distinctive vocals and guitar work, and the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd all contribute to a memorable listening experience. While "Alchemy" remains the definitive "Dire Straits" live album, "On the Night" is a worthy successor that showcases the band's continued excellence as a live act. Fans of the band and classic rock enthusiasts alike should definitely give this album a listen. - Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
Written By: Moti Kupfer Release date - 10.05.1996 Take the mastermind of Ric Ocasek from The Cars, add four geeky guys who love to crank up their guitars. Mix it all with a music video shot in the ’90s, referencing a TV show from the ’70s ("Happy Days") that itself takes place in the ’50s… what do you get? "Buddy Holly", of course. No, not the musician. We’re talking about the second single by Weezer from their debut album "Weezer (Blue Album)", released on May 10, 1994. The album included songs the band had been playing on the road for years beforehand, including "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" and "Undone - The Sweater Song". The track was written by frontman and primary songwriter Rivers Cuomo in response to mockery from his friends about his Asian girlfriend. The brilliant video, directed by Spike Jonze, was played relentlessly on MTV, and it’s no surprise why. Suddenly, it brought back to life beloved characters like Fonzie, Richie Cunningham, Joanie Cunningham, and even Al Delvecchio. Cuomo originally planned to leave the song off the album. He felt it was too cheesy and didn’t quite represent the sound he envisioned for "Weezer". Producer Ric Ocasek convinced him otherwise, recalling that at one point Cuomo hesitated about including "Buddy Holly", so he suggested recording it anyway and deciding later whether to use it. "Weezer" was formed in the Los Angeles rock scene of the early ’90s. Frontman and guitarist Rivers Cuomo moved to Los Angeles from Connecticut in 1989 with his high school metal band "Avant Garde", which later changed its name to "Zoom". After the group disbanded, Cuomo met drummer Patrick Wilson and moved in with him and Wilson’s friend Matt Sharp. Cuomo gradually distanced himself from metal and became interested in alternative rock acts like "Nirvana", "Pixies", and "Sonic Youth". Cuomo and Wilson formed a band called "Fuzz", recruiting Scotty Chapman on bass. Chapman left after a few early shows, and although the lineup shifted, the band quickly dissolved. Cuomo, Wilson, Sharp, and guitarist Jason Cropper officially formed "Weezer" on February 14, 1992. Their first performance took place on March 19, 1992, opening for "Dogstar", the band of Keanu Reeves. The band’s name came from a childhood nickname given to Cuomo by his father, inspired by a character named “Weezer” from the "Our Gang" short films dating back to 1922. In November, the band recorded a demo titled "The Kitchen Tape". It caught the attention of Todd Sullivan, a publicist at Geffen Records, who signed "Weezer" in June 1993. Less than a year later, their debut album, commonly known as "The Blue Album", was released. It blended alternative rock with power pop, combining heavy guitar work reminiscent at times of Seattle’s grunge scene with catchy pop melodies. Some music magazines even described their style as nerd rock. The first single released from the album, "Undone - The Sweater Song", tells the story of a person slowly losing their grip on reality. Despite its humorous tone, the lyrics carry a deeper sense of sadness. Rivers Cuomo had unresolved issues with his alcoholic father, who abandoned the family when he was four years old. He wrote "Say It Ain't So", the album’s third single, about those unresolved emotions. Years later, he would reconnect with him. If there was one place Cuomo saw as a refuge, it was the garage at his home, a place he could escape to. He recalled having posters of his favorite rock band "Kiss" on the wall, which inspired "In the Garage". The debut album of "Weezer" went on to sell over three million copies in the United States, marking the beginning of a long-lasting career that would grow to no fewer than fifteen studio albums by 2021. The lead single from the "Jupiter" disc, "Dani California", is a rock song that pays homage to various musical influences of the band members, such as Jimi Hendrix, "The Beatles", and "The Rolling Stones", when the one-minute guitar solo at the end of the song is actually an adaption of Jimi Hendrix's intro to "Purple Haze". The lyrics talk about the early death of Dani, a poor, young Southern girl who eventually lived in California. - Alex Van Halen
Drummer Alex Van Halen is celebrating his birthday today, and this is a good opportunity to get to know him a little better. (Photo: Paul Natkin) 1. He was born in Amsterdam on May 8, 1953, as Alexander Arthur van Halen. 2. He's the older brother of guitarist Eddie Van Halen. 3. He entered the world of music inspired by his father who was a jazz artist who played clarinet, saxophone, and piano. 4. In 1962 his family emigrated to the United States and lived in Pasadena California. 5. At a very young age he began to learn to play the piano. 6. Later Alex started learning to play the guitar, while his brother Eddie Van Halen started learning to play the drums. 7. When Eddie would leave the house Alex used to sneak into his room and play his drums. One day Eddie came home and saw Alex playing the drum solo of "The Surfaris" on the song "Wipe Out". He immediately realized he was not as good as Alex and decided to switch to guitar, while Alex switched to drums. 8. One of the first musical influences on him as a drummer was that of Ray Phillips, drummer "Budgie". However, he also mentioned Billy Cobham, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, John Bonham, and Buddy Rich as influencing his playing. 9. Alex and Eddie formed their first band "The Broken Combs" when Eddie was in fourth grade and Alex was in sixth grade. 10. In 1971, Alex graduated from Pasadena High School. And began taking lessons in music theory, scoring, composition, and arranging at Pasadena City College, where he met Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth. 11. They began to gain an appreciation and an audience in the Los Angeles pub scene, when in 1976 Gene Simmons discovered them and decided to produce a demo tape for them. 13. Simmons passed the tape with a recommendation to Kiss' record company, but they foolishly replied that the band had no chance of succeeding. 14. By the way, Alex and Eddie played in the demo of the song "Christine Sixteen" from the album "Love Gun" by "Kiss". 15. Eventually in 1977 "Warner Bros." decided to sign them up on a recording contract and the debut album "Van Halen" was released in 1978. 16. Alex and Eddie's father plays the clarinet in the song "Big Bad Bill" from Van Halen's album "Diver Down", which was released in 1982. 17. Alex is a wild animal on stage. He gave a crazy performance at the band's shows and used to light his drumsticks and drums on fire during his drum solo. (Photo: Pinterest.com) 18. He was also wild off-stage. The name Alex Van Halen appeared quite a bit in the damage reports issued by hotels to the band's management. Among the damages were lamps on which he drummed until they broke, shattered mirrors, bathroom doors removed from their hinges, toilet seats found in the parking lot, and more ... 19. His wild character took a toll on him, when in 1995 he was forced to do much of the 1995 “Balance” tour with a huge neck brace, after hurting three vertebrae in his neck. 20. His drum kits grew more and more as the years went by, to the point where Eddie finally complained that he could no longer see him during concerts. (Photo: Pinterest.com) 21. He was loyal to one lineup that also included his younger brother, Eddie, for all his musical life. Except for a few appearances as a replacement drummer in his father's "wedding band", he never played with other artists outside of "Van Halen". 22. He played keyboards in the instrumental section "Respect the Wind", which he co-wrote with Eddie for the soundtrack of the movie "Twister". 23. In addition, Eddie and Alex co-wrote the song "Humans Being" with Sami Hagar for the soundtrack of the aforementioned film. 24. One of his iconic pieces is the short drum solo in the song "Hot for Teacher" from the album "1984". 25. The term "Brown Sound" coined by Eddie Van Halen and describing Eddie's unique guitar sound, actually refers to Alex's snare drum sound, which Eddie said was "hot and big". 26.
