  • Dana Berger

She may be seen as a pop singer, but the musician Dana Berger was strongly influenced by the rock of the 80s and is a rocker at heart!! Photo: Ilan Bensor = She was born in the Neve Shanan neighborhood in Haifa on November 2, 1970, but grew up and was educated in Jerusalem. = Her parents divorced when she was 5 years old, her father left home and she stayed to live with her mother who was a teacher at the school she attended. She would visit her father once a week. = She says that she was a "good Jerusalem girl", ballet class twice a week, piano class twice a week, and Scouts once a week. She used to listen to George Michael, Olivia Newton-John, and Duran Duran, and needless to say, she was a good student. = At the age of 15, like a typical teenage girl she made a 180-degree turn, she entered the world of rock. She said that Olivia and George were replaced, by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Bauhaus, and more... From a good girl, she became a "freak" with black clothing, torn shirts, and heavy makeup. = In 1987 she founded the band "O Ban". A Jerusalem punk rock band that vented its anger on everything possible, against the government, against the police, against environmental pollution, and even against plutonium!! No kidding, they had a song called "Radioactive Plutonium". (Photo: Gabriel Baharlya) = One day the band receives an invitation to perform at the legendary "Metro" club in Tel Aviv. Dana goes on stage with a short black mini skirt up to her chest and black gloves to the shoulders and roars her soul in front of the entire Israeli musical brass which includes: Dan Toren, Yermi Kaplan, Korin Elal, and more. = She enlists in the army and to her surprise, she is accepted into the Nahal band, thanks in large part to Tzedi Tsarfati. During the army, she moves to the big city of Tel Aviv in order to fulfill her musical dream. Her mother, who is concerned with her daughter's move, takes a sabbatical and moves with her to live in Tel Aviv. = In 1990, nearing the end of her military service, one day she receives a call from Dan Toren who offers her to join his and Yuval Messner's new band. Dana doesn't think twice and a week after she is released from the army she holds the first concert of the band "Balagan" at the legendary "Roxanne" club. = Two weeks after the performance, the band gets significant exposure when it is invited to be a guest on Rivka Michaeli's show "Reason for a Party" on Channel One. = Dana, Dan, and Yuval together with Yair Gat on the bass, Dror Margalit on the keyboards, and Gal Hadani on the drums (who was later replaced by Ra Mochiah) in 1991 the band recorded their only album "Urban Paradise", which was released in March 1992 by the label "Ponocol". All the members of the band arranged and musically produced the album. The two songs that stood out from the album were "Gvarim Miktsoanim" and "Sheket" written by Yona Wallach and composed by Yuval Messner. The band broke up shortly after the release of the album. = Dana will never forget the first time she heard herself on the radio, it was during the Gulf War. One evening, when she was a waitress in a pub in Dizengoff, there was a missile siren, and the employees together with the customers entered the safe room of the pub. While they are listening to the radio and waiting for the message that they can leave the safe room, the band's song "Sheket" was playing on the radio. = Yoav Kutner wrote about the band: "Balagan, especially in retrospect, was the "top band", which only existed for a short time but managed to record an album that had several "classic" sections of Israeli rock of the early 90s. The band was active just before the big boom of young, alternative Israeli rock. Perhaps if she had lasted a little longer, she would have realized her potential for success in real time. But Balagan, as mentioned, existed only for a short time, and only after its breakup did its members start successful solo careers." = In the same year, Dana was cast in the successful TV series "Inyan shell Zman". The series focused on the plots of 11th-grade 5 students (as of the first season) in a high school in North Tel Aviv, on the problems of teenagers, and dealt with topics such as studies, adolescence, love, recruiting for the IDF, social gaps, rape, drugs, early pregnancy, bulimia, etc. Dana played in the series for 7 years. = Dana began to be more involved in local music and participated in many different projects such as the rock opera "Samara" by Hillel Mittelpunkt, participation in the 1992 Festival, she participated in Rafi Adar's album "The Full Heart of Kontinka" and appeared for the first time as a soloist in 1993 as part of the music festival "Rock in the Red Sea". = At the same time she starts studying at the "Rimon" music school, but the affair ends quickly and after three months she leaves. = In 1994, Dana released her debut album "Dana Berger", in which she wrote and composed most of the material on the album and collaborated with Vered Clifter, Johnny Shuali, Berry Sakharof , Oded Farah, and Ra Mochiah. The style of the album was "hard" and "wild" rock n' roll, with hard and sharp lyrics. The most prominent songs from it are "King", "And my heart is Empty" and "What will be left for Me at the End". Berger's picture appearing on the back of the cover with a nosebleed also represented the musical atmosphere of the album. The album was not a commercial success. = Dana appeared at the rally in support of the Oslo Accords, which took place in the Kings of Israel Square (now Rabin Square) on November 4, 1994, with the song "Quiet", shortly before the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. = In 1998, Dana released her second album, "Just to Be", produced by Yuval Shafrir. This album was characterized by much softer songs than her previous album. Among the most prominent songs in it are "Far from Reality", "Passing Warmth", "Come and we will go from here" and "Waiting for him". Also on this album, she collaborated with other artists, among them once again Vered Klafter and Toren as well as Yehuda Ader and the keyboardist Eyal Klein. The album was a great success and was accompanied by several successful performances. Alongside the album, Berger appeared in various musical projects and children's festivals. = In 2000, Dana released her third album, "Ad Hakaze", with the musical production of Ofer Meiri. The album which was her big breakthrough brought Dana tremendous success and made her one of the most prominent singers in Israeli music. Among the prominent songs on the album was "Learning to Fly", "Up to the End", "Love", and "There Is a point in It" (a remake of Yael Levy's song, originally called "No Crying") and "Crying for you". The sales of the album earned it a double platinum album status and in the annual Hebrew chart of "Reshet Gimel" radio station in the same year Berger won the title "Singer of the Year". = In 2003 she released her fourth album, "In Motion", also musically produced by Ofer Meiri. Among the outstanding songs from the album were "Ba and Holech" (which she wrote for her partner, Adi Sharon), "While on the Move", "Gan Meir" and "Five in the Morning". Following the album, Berger once again won the title of "Singer of the Year" in the annual chart. = In 2005, she participated in the debut album of the band "Metropolis", where she sang the song "Sleep without Dreaming" together with the soloist Roni Alter. = In 2006, Berger's fifth album, "Yom Yom", was released, this time with the musical production of Loui Lahav. Some of the songs on the album were written by Tsurya Lahav. Among the outstanding songs from the album were "Mother" and "Haruti". = In 2010, "Here I Came Home", a joint album by Berger and Laity Pearl, was released. The theme song of the album was also used as the theme song of the television series "Khatofim". Another song that stood out was the first single "Loli". = In 2014 Dana released her seventh album "Gifts of Time", musically produced by Yossi Phayne. After the release of the album, the songs "My Walls" and "See You" were released as singles. = In 2016 she took part in the children's album "The Treasure", a project initiated, composed, and produced by Gal Ziv, in which Alon Ader, Gadi Ronan, Yael Deckelbaum, and more participated. (Photo: Ilan Bashor) = In 2017 Dana released her eighth album "Congested Days". Dana created the album through a crowdfunding project at Headstart and raised NIS 100,001. In March 2017, the first single "Negan" was released, which was a success. At the end of May 2017, the second single "Crowded Days" was released accompanied by a music video starring Lior Ashkenazi. In July 2017, the third single from the album was released - "You're not at home". = In 2020 Dana collaborated with her partner Adi Sharon and the two released the album "DNA", with Dana providing the lyrics and vocals and Adi providing the electronic beats and the electrifying atmosphere. The album includes 11 songs, most of which were written by Dana herself in addition to texts by others - "Shelter Public" and "Forgiveness" written by the poet Meir Goldberg, "Roots?" written jointly by Dana Berger and Samira Sariya, "Trees" written by Arik Einstein and "Kohav" which Dana Berger wrote inspired by a text by Gilad Admoni. = In February 2022, Dana released her tenth album "All Love to the Best". An album was created by chance, in collaboration with Michal Dagan, Dana's student in a writing workshop. Those meetings between a teacher and student gave birth to an album in which all the lyrics were written by Michal Dagan and composed by Berger. The album was created spontaneously without planning or thought, every time they finished working on a text, Dana automatically took the guitar and composed. = In December 2022, Dana once again joined forces with her partner, and under their joint project "DNA Homebase", they released their second album which, interestingly, bears the exact same name as their debut, only this time written in capital letters: "DNA". = Apart from Dana's musical career, she also has quite an acting career under her belt!! She participated in the series "Saturdays and Holidays", "Girls" and "Wonderful Divorce". She played in the drama series for children and youth "The Island" and also in the series "Diaries of the Great Vacation". She also participated in the seventh season of "Survival", the program she finished in fifth place. = The song "Nafelt Hizk" was written by Hemi Rudner about Dana due to her separation from her boyfriend and partner Yermi Kaplan. = The song "You Come and go" was written by Dana about her current partner Adi Sharon. Dana said that after two weddings and a divorce, she fell in love again with a musician who made her life difficult. At the beginning of their relationship, he would come and go for a week or two each time. Since he didn't answer the phones and didn't return messages, Dana wrote the song. = In August 2024, Dana released "Gagoa Hai", a song written and composed by Orit Dokler, who studied with the late Shahar (Debi) Mathias in Ramon, Mathias was murdered together with her husband Shlomi in their home in Kibbutz Hulit on October 7. = In December 2024, Dana released her 12th album, "With an Open Heart". The album includes the song "Wrapped and Protected" , which Berger dedicated to all the women who remained in captivity during the "Iron Swords" war. • Neil Young - Harvest Moon

On November 2, 1992, Neil Young released his 19th studio album "Harvest Moon". This is exactly the album you need to listen to right now. So this time let's do it differently. Please jump straight to the end of the review, click play, and start listening to this magic. We'll wait.... Did you click? Fine, so you can start .... In 1992 exactly 20 years after the album "Harvest" Neil Young returns with an album reminiscent of that masterpiece. Neil Young insisted it was not a sequel, but this album certainly corresponds with that mind-blowing album. Apparently, the album title explains the connection with "Harvest" in the best way. it makes it clear to us that this is the same family and therefore there are many similarities between the two brothers. At the same time, it has an addition. A kind of reminder that there is still an age gap between the two, so there is no chance that we will get "more of the same", but instead it would be the "next generation" version, more contemporary, and more up-to-date. The great similarity between the two albums is not only found in the title. Similar to the "Harvest", this album was recorded in Nashville and with the same group of musicians who accompanied Young on that masterpiece: Ben Keith on the steal pedal, Tim Drummand on bass, Kenny Buttrey on drums and Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor on background vocals. On this album Young chooses to go as far as possible from the sound that has established his title as the "godfather of grunge". Even before the "Arc" feedback subsided, even before the distortion sounds of "Weld" disappeared, Young replaced his electric "1953 Gibson Les Paul" with the acoustic "Martin D-45" and created for us a peaceful, calm, quiet, Magical and exciting album. This album once again proves to us what we already know about Neil Young . He always does what feels right to him, not what is expected of him. He broke into electronic music with "Trans" when he thought it would help him communicate with his son who was born with cerebral palsy. He played "Rockabilly" on the album "Everybody's Rockin" as revenge on the record company that refused to release the album "Old Ways" and he does it again this time with "Harvest Moon", When everyone expected him to continue riding the grunge wave and produce another grungy and rough album. Just think what the music market looked like in 1992 and you will understand that it took quite a bit of courage to release a country-folk album at this time, especially after a huge live album like "Weld". And what amazing songs there are in this album. The romantic opening song " Unknown Legend " was inspired by Young's wife at the time Pegi Morton Young. Young first met Peggy when she was working in a restaurant and the song does refer to a waitress, a mother of two, who once lived restlessness on the roads, riding a Harley Davidson in the desert, with the chrome and steel blending with the air she breathes ... " From Hank To Hendrix " continues along the same lines and describes the changes in the relationship over time, with Young mentioning various artists as reference points to the stage of the relationship, including those who influenced him musically like Hank Williams and Jimi Hendrix also mentioned in the song title. The third song " You and Me " already proves to us that "Relationships" are probably the connecting thread between the songs on the album. How do you make a relationship last? How do we keep it alive and well despite over time? How do you make love last? The whole song is an invitation to cherish the past while maintaining hope for a good future. This track mentions and corresponds with "Old Man" from that masterful album ... The perfect theme song " Harvest Moon " uses the motif of the "Moon", which Young mentioned as a very important factor and has a great influence on him. The influence of the moon on Young is so great that this motif is repeated in almost 30 of his songs. This song is also a tribute to Young's wife - Peggy and you can even see the two dancing in a bar in a video clip released for the song, here: It is interesting that Young plays in this song with quite a few instruments. Guitar, harmonica, banjo, piano, organ, vibraphone. Another interesting fact is that the chords in the song is "Borrowed" from that of "The Everly Brothers" in the song "Walk Right Back", see here: The dark folk-style " War of Man " track that addresses the destructive instinct of the human race, is one of our favorites on this excellent album. The chorus is so magical and catchy and the chord sequence is mesmerizing. " Such a Woman " is a pure and moving love song and another homage to Neil Young 's wife. Have we already said "relationships"? And it's impossible not to mention the final track " Natural Beauty ", more than 10 minutes of "natural beauty," recorded live in Portland, Oregon on January 23, 1992. • Foo Fighters - There Is Nothing Left To Loss

The "Foo Fighters" amazing, rough, and analog album "There is Nothing Left To Lose" was released on November 2, 1999, we can't believe more than 20 fucking years have passed !!! We are delighted to review this fantastic and uplifting album that embodies the essence of what music should be... Let's take a moment to trace the origins of this delightful and entertaining album. In 1997, following their deep dedication to music, the band recorded an intense rock album titled "The Colour and Shape," embarked on an extensive world tour, experienced the departure of their drummer William Goldsmith during recording, and lost their guitarist Pat Smear while on tour. Shortly after, they also said goodbye to another guitarist, Franz Stahl, during the tour. Bassist Nate Mendel eventually called Dave to announce his departure, citing exhaustion from the chaos and the reunion of his previous band, "Sunny Day Real Estate." Devastated, Dave resorted to heavy drinking and destructive behavior, venting his frustrations on his car and the neighbors' lawns, as he still lived with his mother despite the band's success with two major albums. Fortunately, the following morning, Nate called Dave to retract his decision, expressing regret and confirming his commitment to remain in the band. They agreed to create the album solely as a trio this time, without involving a record label, producers, other artists, or assistants. It would be just the three of them - Dave Grohl , Nate Mendel , and Taylor Hawkins . Choosing to step away from the limelight of Los Angeles, Dave made the decision to move out of his mother's home and purchase a property in Virginia. To emphasize his desire for a change, Los Angeles and Virginia are approximately 4,000 miles apart, with Los Angeles located on the west coast and Virginia on the east coast. It is here that Dave initiates a lasting DIY tradition by constructing a studio within his home, resulting in the creation of his renowned "Studio 606" in the basement of his new residence. When asked about the significance of the number 606, Dave explains that it is a well-known number that can be spotted in various places. (Photo: Danny Clinch) Stripped of all the fancy extras, without a record label and no one else involved except for Adam Kasper in the technical producer role, they headed down to the basement and began work on what would become one of the band's finest albums. According to the three band members, this period was one of the most enjoyable and laid-back times of their lives. Their daily routine consisted of indulging in BBQ, whiskey, and beer, while immersing themselves in the creative process. Unburdened by commitments or external pressures, they crafted music freely, uninhibited by any constraints, almost as if they had nothing to lose... As an additional detail, Dave insisted on recording this album in an analog fashion, eschewing computers entirely in favor of reel tape, reminiscent of the methods used in the past. Speaking of which... Dave mentioned in an interview that whenever he listens to this album, he is instantly transported back to the basement, recalling the scent wafting in through the springtime windows and the birdsong that occasionally interrupted vocal recordings. (Photo: Danny Clinch) The album commences with the track "Stacked Actors," featuring a powerful blend of drums and guitars, serving as a depiction of the band's departure from Los Angeles. The song delves into the theme of artificiality and insincerity, reflecting on their time in Hollywood where everyone appeared to be mere actors. While acknowledging their own participation in that facade, they have since moved on and now find humor in the past. "Breakout" is a fantastic second track with a great rhythm. Crank up the volume, watch the music video, and you won't be able to resist jumping and letting loose. We all have a desire to break free from something, and with the Foo Fighters, it's a truly enjoyable experience. The next track "Learn To Fly" is truly outstanding. It's not because of its musical complexity, touching lyrics, or mesmerizing performance, but simply because it's incredibly fun! This song has a universal appeal that makes you want to sing along wherever you are. It brings uncontrollable laughter when you recall the music video and is a pure joy that radiates happiness. And no, we're not overstating it! In fact, they even received a Grammy for this song in 2001, so relax... Feel free to proceed to "Gimme Stitches" , which delves into a complex relationship where both partners continuously inflict pain on each other yet choose to remain together. Following that is "Generator" , which kicks off with Dave utilizing his Talk Box, a rare occurrence, and a hi-hat opening in syncope (off-beat), adding an addictive quality to the track. The song explores the concept of making sacrifices for someone who is your foundation. This person ignites your inner drive, and you are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain it, even at the expense of your well-being. Next up is "Aurora" , one of the album's most captivating and melodious tracks. Dave mentioned their emphasis on crafting melodic songs that are enjoyable to sing and pleasing to the listener's ear throughout the album. Despite the lyrics being a collection of words that don't form a complete narrative, the song holds a special place for Dave as it reflects on his time in Seattle. (Photo: Danny Clinch) The next track, "Live-In Skin," was not originally intended for the album. It was written after the recordings were completed and the album was in the mixing stage. Dave spontaneously created a riff that he loved so much that he felt compelled to include it on the album. This riff is truly remarkable, and the song itself is engaging as Dave passionately expresses his emotions. By paying close attention to the following song in the sequence, where Dave greets everyone, you can appreciate the band's harmonious beauty, reminiscent of analog recordings. "Next Year" is a remarkable song with a captivating structure and performance. The music video, inspired by the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, perfectly captures the song's ability to transport listeners to another world. The track "Headwires" serves as a natural progression, almost like a continuation from the preceding song. The subsequent track opens with Dave delicately plucking the strings, creating a sensation akin to gliding softly on a cotton ball while gently swaying our head from side to side. "Ain't It the Life" alludes to the unpredictable nature of fame, where stars can either rise or fall, drawing possible parallels to the era of "Nirvana." As the second-to-last track on the Japanese version and the final track on the international release, just before Dave departs, it emphasizes his tendency to flee and abandon situations when they turn sour. He is poised to become "M.I.A" (Missing In Action), a poignant choice to conclude the album. (The Japanese version also features "Fraternity," where Dave expresses his aversion to joining a fraternity, making it a compelling closing track). The album cover showcases a photo of the back of Dave's neck after getting the band's initials tattooed, epitomizing authenticity and a raw, analog aesthetic. (Photo: Danny Clinch) In 2001, this album won the band a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. When Dave joined the band and producer on stage to receive the award, he couldn't help but think, "I'm certain this will be the only Grammy-winning album, that was made in a house basement." We can't speak for everyone, but the last album we recall being recorded in a basement was "Ten" by "Pearl Jam". • Scorpions - Fly to the Rainbow

On November 1, 1974 "Scorpions" released their second album "Fly to the Rainbow". The album represents a major turning point for the band, due to lineup changes and a change in musical direction. "Fly to the Rainbow" followed the debut " Lonesome Crow ", which leaned heavily into "Krautrock" genre . After touring as the opening act for British rock band "UFO" to support " Lonesome Crow ", "Scorpions" lead guitarist Michael Schenker was invited to join "UFO" as their guitarist and accepted the offer, leaving the "Scorpions" at a crossroads. It was during this transitional period that Uli Jon Roth entered the scene. Roth, along with his bandmates from "Dawn Road"—drummer Jürgen Rosenthal and bassist Francis Buchholz—would join forces with "Scorpions'" Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker effectively merging the two groups under the "Scorpions" name and thus changing it style and sound. Roth’s addition added a distinct edge, blending his Hendrix -inspired virtuosity with a more progressive and experimental approach. The result is a rich fusion of heavy rock, blues, psychedelia, and hints of prog rock, laying a new foundation for what would become the band’s signature sound. "Fly to the Rainbow" is an album of exploration, setting a fresh direction for "Scorpions" that balances powerful hooks with ambitious guitar work. The album opens with “ Speedy’s Coming ,” a high-energy track marked by its infectious riff and Klaus Meine ’s commanding vocals, establishing the band’s knack for catchy rock hooks that would later characterize their most popular songs. Here, Uli Jon Roth 's frenetic solos showcase a raw talent that would soon evolve, while Rudolf Schenker ’s rhythm guitar provides a solid anchor, emphasizing the band's new dynamic. The second track “ They Need a Million ” already brings a drastic change with its classical guitar intro and Rudolf Schenker 's lead vocals . But then, in 1:14 min. when you are sure this is going to be a beautiful ballad, everything change and the infectious heavy guitar riff pirecing through through the speakers. The song combines hard rock with progressive elements and tackles themes of desire and ambition in a complex. Uli Jon Roth 's guitar lines sound a bit oriental while Klaus Meine operatic background vocals reminds us of his work in " Lonesome Crow ". Tracks like “ Drifting Sun ” written sang by Uli Jon Roth (with Meine on backing vocals) push the band's versatility further, blending styles with complex arrangements that lean into jazz and prog rock influences. Rosenthal’s dynamic drumming adds texture, while Buchholz's bass lines provide rhythmic depth. " Fly People Fly " is a a bluesy ballad, one of 3 tracks co-written with departing guitarist Michael Schenker as part of his agreement on leaving the band. " This Is My Song " captures the raw energy that defined the "Scorpions’" early years, making it a memorable and uplifting piece of the album, while " Far Away ", also co-written by Michael Schenker , brings progressive vibes and softens the pace, with Meine delivering one of his most delicate vocal performances to date, framed by Roth's gentle, shimmering guitar work The epic title track “ Fly to the Rainbow ”  written by Michael Schenker and Uli Jon Roth close the album is an atmospheric journey that highlights Roth’s influence on the band. His expansive, progressive guitar lines, paired with Meine’s soaring vocals, create an emotional and introspective piece that builds layers of sound across its nine-minute runtime. Roth’s playing on this track draws from his background, adding a cosmic, almost ethereal quality that sets it apart from the rest of the album. Though "Fly to the Rainbow" may lack the cohesion of later "Scorpions" releases, its willingness to take risks is central to its appeal. The fusion of Roth's ambitious guitar work and the band's developing rock sensibilities creates an album that’s as raw as it is innovative. "Fly to the Rainbow" is a critical piece of the "Scorpions’" early catalog, capturing the band at a moment of transformation. This album is a fascinating glimpse into the early days of a group that was still discovering its unique voice. • Megadeth - Youthanasia

On November 1, 1994, "Megadeth's" sixth studio album, "Youthanasia", was released. The name of the album comes from a combination of the words Youth and Euthanasia, with criticism of the American society, that ostensibly "kills" its youth. The album cover with the babies hung by the older woman upside down, drying, blending with the album title and the theme song lyrics "Youthanasia", which indicate: "Who's believe we'd spend more shippin' drugs and guns, Than to educate our sons?" And further: "we've been hung out to dry...". "Youthanasia" continues with the line of the previous album " Countdown to Extinction " and includes further softening of the band's music, towards slower, less complex, and more melodic songs. This album deepened the split among the band's fans, that began in the previous album, when those veterans who accompanied "Megadeth" from the beginning hoped that the deviation from the path was temporary and that the band would return to the fast and nervous thrash of " Peace Sells... but Who's Buying ? " And " Rust In Peace ". The band wrote most of the album in Phoenix, Arizona, where Dave Mustaine moved with his family in 1994 as part of his rehab process. Bassist Dave Ellefson and guitarist Marty Friedman also moved to Phoenix to make it easier for the band to work on the album. The goal was to rent a large house to serve as a studio for the band, but the band eventually rented a huge warehouse and began building the studio there from scratch, which took them of a long time than scheduled. For more on building the studio and the process of writing and recording the album, watch the documentary that accompanied the process of creating the album, here: During the writing process, the band members realized that what worked best for them during this period were actually slower, more melodic songs, with "hooks" and harmonies. Dave's singing also took a significant turn, he screamed less and sang more. Dave Mustaine noted that the change was not out of conscious choice and that the band did not really change, but "evolved". He said he was sure that whoever asked for songs on the radio would recognize with certainty that it was "Megadeth". Although the writing process in the new studio was very productive, a lot of friction arose between the band members. Most of the confrontations evolved around Dave Mustaine 's creative control, and to deal with it and make the writing process democratic, the band had to go through group therapy sessions to help them get through the recording process in peace. It can be said that the group therapies helped the other members to get more creative freedom and even Dave Mustaine himself defined the album as "very much a total band effort", but at the same time, this whole situation charged Dave a high price. He went back to alcohol and drugs and even before the album was completed he was already back in rehab. Despite all the problems and despite the change in style towards the mainstream, "Youthanasia" turned out to be an excellent and consistent album that we really like and even manage to enjoy today more than it was when it came out. Two singles were released from the album: the first, " Train of Consequences " which includes the crazy riff with the obscure palm-muted strings. The song deals with the problem of gambling and its destructive impact on society in America. The second is " Tout Le Monde " which is without a doubt one of the band's biggest "hits". The French sentence that Dave sings says the following words: "To all the world, To all my friends, I love you, I have to leave". These words were interpreted as referring to suicide, as they seemed like a part of a suicide note, so the song was initially boycotted by MTV. However, later after MTV executives received explanations from Dave, they returned the song to the channel rotation. Dave Mustaine explained to the network that the song refers to his dream. He dreamed that his deceased mother came from heaven to tell him that she loved him, and the song describes the dialogue with her. But the album is definitely not just these two successful singles. The opening song " Reckoning Day " refers to the Apocalypse, the Day of Judgment, in which we will all be paid for our actions. Dave Mustaine got the idea for the song after watching the 1993 film "Tombstone," in which Val Kilmer says the sentence: "Make no mistake. It's not revenge he's after. It's a reckoning". " Addicted to Chaos " with the melodic riff and the catchy chorus, speaks of the loss of a close friend who helped Dave in difficult times. In this song, you can really hear the "heaviness" that fell on the band with the slow rhythm that really forces Marty Friedman to adjust his solos to the new situation. " The Killing Road " deals with shows, tours, and life on the road. It shows the not-so-glamorous side of the "rock star" and the heavy price he has to pay. As you know Dave Mustaine has always been in conflict on this matter. On the one hand, he did not like the travels, and on the other hand, he liked the moments on stage and the pure direct connection with the fans. Dave's singing picks up gear here and Friedman's solo is just awesome !!! " Blood of Heroes " opens up the second side of the vinyl with a quiet and melodic intro. Without a doubt one of the album's catchy songs, with a riff that corresponds with the heavy metal bands of the seventies and eighties. " Family Tree " refers to a horrible story of rape and incest within the family. It criticizes things that happen within the family and is sometimes kept secret. It is one of the strongest songs on the album, both in terms of lyrics and in terms of melody, and performance. " Black Curtains " deals with death and destruction and includes some riffs in the direction of "groove metal". It opens with a reference to the murderer Charles Manson, who wrote on the walls of his crime scene the lyrics of the Beatles' song "Helter Skelter." The album ends with " Victory " a song that deals with the dissonance between the way people see Megadeth as a "victory" or success, and the hard feelings and upheavals Dave went through on the way there. Dave reveals here everything "I had fingers in my eyes, needles in my arteries" and he is referring to his struggle with drugs. "Knife through my heart" Dave screams and with no doubt refers to his former band and the "betrayal" he felt when he was Fired From Metallica . The lyrics of the song also mention the names of the band's great songs during its career. "Youthanasia" may have expanded the split in the band's fan base, but it received good reviews. It may not have been as successful as the band's previous album, but it still reached number four on the Billboard charts and sold very well. The band will not be able to replicate this achievement until the album "Dystopia" released in 2016. • Nirvana - MTV Unplugged

On November 1, 1994, the special album "Nirvana MTV Unplugged" was released. There is a constant debate among us as to which MTV Unplugged show was the best, most special, and most exciting between Nirvana and Alice in Chains, two phenomenal shows both have a huge impact on rock music. We've already reviewed "Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged" which was MTV Unplugged's most moving show and it's hard not to mention, God forbid to compare, but just to mention the above show when talking about Nirvana's show. So Alice's performance was very emotional and came from a very fragile and sensitive place mainly because of the appearance of Layne Staley who looked like a broken man, but also because we knew what to expect since we listened for several weeks to the album "Jar Of Flies" . But we have never heard Nirvana without distortion, it is hard to describe how Kurt Cobain , Dave Grohl , and Krist Novoselic would sound without all the distortions and amps and hence Nirvana's performance came from somewhere else, it was a performance that came out of courage, out of daring. A performance that from start to finish was strong, stiff, and uncompromising. Of course, it is impossible not to accept the fact that the impact of this performance had was intensified since it came out after Cobain's death. The show itself took place on November 18 at Sony Music Studios in New York, Cobain committed suicide four and a half months after the show and the album came out 7 months after his death. (Photo: Frank Micelota) For many months MTV executives begged Nirvana to hold the show which became an essential and significant challenge or goal in the life of a band at that time, a kind of skill test. The band members objected for a long time, especially Kurt who was terrified of performing the band's songs so naked. But during the tour with the band Meat Puppets, the friends agreed and the mythological show began to embroider skin and bones. In order to strengthen the band and in our opinion also to instill a kind of confidence in the band members, the three added their friend Pat Smear . Rehearsals for the show took place over three days wrapped in immense tension and a strict atmosphere. Aside from the fact that Kurt had severe anxieties in his daily routine, at that time he underwent drug rehab and his level of stress and anxiety were higher than usual. The production people who were at the rehearsals said that during the rehearsals there were no smiles, laughter, or fun of any kind and everyone was anxious about the performance that Kurt would have at the show. Add to that the fact that he was anxious about the fact that he had to perform so exposed without distortions, beating drums, and screaming amps, that he insisted that his guitar be connected with the pedals to his Fender amp. The amplifier was covered with cardboard during the show so that it would take the shape of a monitor and not look like an amplifier (you can hear the sound very well in the song "The Man Who Sold the World"). Add to that the anxieties of the production company that tore every existing hair in light of the fact that Kurt refused to perform any of the band's hits and if that was not enough then they decided to take the stage and perform songs by the band Meat Puppets that no one knew. The production company tried to pressure the band to change the setlist but nothing helped. Unlike many bands that appeared on Unplugged and brought their biggest hits, Nirvana decided to go head to head with the system, whether it was out of defiance against the music industry or whether it was out of a desire to prove the show would be amazing even without hits, we do not know but what is certain is that it succeeded. The setlist, which consisted of 14 songs, included: one song from the album "Bleach" , four songs from "Nevermind" (which only "Come as You Are" was a single), 3 songs from the album "In-Utero" and 6 covers. The sad story of the show is that Kurt asked the production to design the stage with lilies and white candles. When the production told him it would look like a funeral he said... exactly like that, design the stage like a funeral. What turned out to be reality five months later which turned this show into a sort of Kurt funeral service. But with all the tension... the anxiety... the pressure and the horror, the band performed and recorded it in one take! Do you hear what we are saying? only one take!!! • Incubus - Fungus Amongus

A Sneak Peek... Although most of the band's fans love and cherished this album, if you ask the band members they would rather bury it !! It was an album they really enjoyed creating but they admitted they did not know what they were doing at all at that time!! On November 1, 1995, Incubus band released their debut album. In 1991 a group of teenagers who had not yet finished high school decided to form a band. Brandon Boyd , Mike Einziger , Alex Katunich and José Pasillas started writing and playing together and performed at all sorts of clubs and bars along the Sunset Strip without any name, and only at a later stage were they asked to know who they were, they invented the name Incubus. The band members would meet with producer Jim Wirt at a studio in Santa Monica just after school and try to create their own music. In 1995 they added Gavin Koppell on the DJ stand and recorded their first EP "Let Me Tell Ya 'Bout Root Beer" which included only two songs. From there they went on very fast and recorded more songs together with producer Jim and in November 1995 they released their debut album "Fungus Amongus" under their independent label Stopuglynailfungus Music. The band members who have been greatly influenced by bands like RHCP, Primus and Mr. Bungle even thanked them in the "Thanks" section at the end of the album cover. (Photo: Michael Ochs Archives) A funny story is that the band members gave themselves fake names which appear on the cover of the album: "Happy Knappy" (Brandon Boyd) – vocals, djembe "Fabio" (Mike Einziger) – guitars "Dirk Lance" (Alex Katunich) – bass guitar "Salsa" (Jose Pasillas) – drums Even though the album received very harsh reviews and failed commercially, and even though it was not played on any radio station, and even though it did not enter any charts. A year after its release, the band signed a seven-album recording contract with Sony's label then called Immortal Records. Label talent hunter Paul Pontius recognized the band's potential and signed it to the contract. The same label is the one that also signed Korn and in order to add Incubus to Korn's tour they released an EP called "Enjoy Incubus" which included six songs so that the label could present the band's songs during the shows. And the rest is History... Unfortunately, we did not find the album in the streaming services but there is something on: YouTube "Face/Off" - Israel's Rock Blog Follow us on Facebook  / Instagram  or Subscribe to our website

  • Anthony Kiedis

Singer and musician Anthony Kiedis was born on November 1, 1962, and this is a good opportunity to share some interesting facts about him: (Photo: altpress.com) 1. Kiedis was born in Michigan on November 1, 1962, to "Margaret" Peggy and John Michael Kiedis, a stage actor Blackie Dammett. 2. Kiedis' godfather was none other than Sonny Bono from the Sonny & Cher duo. Sony was friends with his father and rumor has it that Sher used to babysit him. 3. Kiedis told in his autobiography "Scar Tissue" that he also saw the babysitter naked on one of the occasions she babysat him. 4. When he was only 3 years old his parents divorced and Kiedis moved in with his mother. 5. At the age of 12 he moved to California with his father whom he admired. 6. During high school he met Flea , his bandmate to Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were both exceptional and outgoing and the common denominator brought them closer together and made them best friends. 7. At the same Fairfax High School in Hollywood, Jack Irons and Hillel Slovak also studied, the future members of "Chili Peppers". 8. In their youth, Flea and Kiedis used to jump from buildings to swimming pools. In one case, Kiedis jumped back from a 5-story building and broke his back. 9. Kiedis' father is the one who introduced him to marijuana and cocaine. At the same time as his father's failed playing career, he was selling drugs, when already at the age of 14 Kiedis accidentally tried heroin after thinking it was cocaine. 10. Kiedis' father was a very "educational" character, he also made sure that his 18-year-old girlfriend "redeemed" Kiedis from his virginity just before Kiedis turned 12. (Photo: NME) 11. Kiedis also received a good musical education from his father who used to take him to shows at clubs in Los Angeles where he saw, among others, Blondie and the Ramones in the 1970s. 12. After one of Blondie's live shows in 1977, Kiedis proposed to Debbie Harry . Debbie confirmed this in an interview from 2008 and noted that she remembers the case well and that she has politely declined Kiedis who seemed like an 8-year-old (he was then 15 years old). 13. Although he made heavy use of drugs during his high school years, Kiedis was a brilliant student who graduated high school with honors. (Photo: NME) 14. Not long after Kiedis moved in with his father in Los Angeles, his father took him on a "business" trip to Wisconsin where his father sold drugs. When they returned to Los Angeles the father hid $ 30,000 on Kiedis' body because he thought no one would search for a child. 15. Kiedis' acting career began at age 16 when in 1978 he starred in the film "F.I.S.T." As the son of Sylvester Stallone. He did so under the stage name Cole Dammett following the stage name of his father Blackie Dammett. 16. During his career he used many other nicknames like Tony Flow which he adopted during his first appearance with Flea, Slovak and Irons, Antoine (Antwan) The Swan, and Sir Psycho Sexy (as the song is named from the album " Blood Sex Sugar Magik "). 17. Kiedis will later star in other films and the best known of them is probably "Breakthrough Point" from 1991, alongside Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. 18. Kiedis' father keeps a wolf as a pet. He called it Howlin 'Wolf. 19. In 1983 he formed with Tony, Flea , Irons, and Slovak the band Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. 20. The band had one song (Out in L.A.) and was formed following a one-time offer that Kiedis received from his friend Mike Chester to be his band's opening show at the Rhythm Lounge Club in Los Angeles. 21. The reviews from the show were so good that the club owner invited them to play there again a week later and even went on to more shows, not before changing the band name to Red Hot Chili Peppers. 22. Kiedis named his son Everly Bear after the "Everly Brothers". 23. Kiedis recounted in his autobiography "Scar Tissue" that in 1984 while under the influence of drugs, he smashed his mother's car straight into a tree, but miraculously survived. 24. In 2008, Kiedis was voted the sexiest "vegetarian" in the world by PETA. 25. Kiedis is a very spiritual type, he practices Vipassana and learns Kabbalah. 26. After a performance in Virginia in 1989 Kiedis was charged with public undressing and sexual assault, after harassing a fan during the performance. 27. The songs "Desecration Smile" and "She's Only 18" were written by Kiedis about his relationship with model Heather Christie. 28. The song "Venice Queen" was written by Kiedis about Gloria Scott a consultant who helped him deal with a drug problem and died of cancer. 29. He dedicated the song "Dani California" to all the women in his life. 30. Rumor has it that the song "Emit Remus" was written by Kiedis about Mel C with whom Kiedis was in a relationship at the time. 31. The rumor also says that Kiedis also went out with Sinead O’Connor and the song “I Could Have Lied” was probably written about her, although Sinead did deny that the two ever went out. 32. Kiedis, Flea and John Frusciante are ardent L.A Lakers fan. 33. Despite his intense love and admiration for Hillel Slovak he was not present at his funeral. Some say the event was too difficult for him, but there is a version that says Hillel's mother accused Kiedis of dragging Hillel to drugs and therefore told him he was not wanted at the funeral. 34. In the song "This Is The Place" from the album "By The Way" from 2002, he explicitly refers to the day of Slovak's death and the issue of drugs. 35. Following the dizzying success of the album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" , the "Chili Peppers" embarked on a worldwide tour. After performing in Australia and New Zealand, the band members returned home and Kiedis made a month-long trek in the isolated forests of Borneo. (Photo: Shannon Stapleton) 36. This trek is badly remembered because he, among other things, contracted wax fever and experienced severe headaches as early as his first night in the woods after a type of cockroach entered his ear canal. 37. In 1992 he appeared with Flea in the music video for the song "Wicked" by Ice Cube. 38. Kiedis has a long-standing rivalry with singer Mike Patton of Faith No More and "Mr. Bungle". This rivalry began immediately with Patton joining FNM and is based on Kiedis' claim that Patton is imitating him on stage. 39. The rivalry created ridiculous situations like the fact that "Mr. Bungle" was forced by the record company to postpone the release of the album "California" which was supposed to be released on the same day as the Chili Peppers' "Californication" album, just because the names were similar. 40. In response, During a 1999 Halloween performance, Mr. Bungle performed the songs "Give It Away", "Around the World", "Under the Bridge" and "Scar Tissue" in a satirical, insulting, and disparaging manner. • Metallica & Lou Reed - Lulu

Some people call this album "the noble failure" and some consider it an artistic masterpiece but it is without a doubt the most infamous album in the rock world, "Lulu" is the collaboration between "Metallica" and Lou Reed that was released on October 31, 2011. 1. This is the last studio album in which Lou Reed was involved before his death in October 2013. 2. The spark for the collaboration between Reed and "Metallica" ignited during a performance at the 25th-anniversary ceremony of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. 3. After two years of playing with the idea of collaboration, "Metallica's" members and Lou Reed entered the studio. 4. The initial idea for the album was to re-record with "Metallica" songs by Lou Reed that did not see the light of day, but while working on the songs he got the idea of "Lulu". After working on a number of songs, the members decided to record the entire album around the idea of Lulu. (Photo: Metallica) 5. This is a concept album based on a play called "Lulu Plays" by German playwright Frank Wedekind. 6. The play tells the story of a stripper who tries to climb up the social ladder but eventually finds herself a prostitute. 7. The lyrics are mostly very graphic and occasionally provide harsh images of violence, racism, and sex from the woman's point of view. 8. Most of the album revolves around the musical idea of Spoken Words, Reed performs the recitations while "Metallica" performs the instrumental part with James Hetfield occasionally participating in the singing. 9. Most of the instrumental parts were written by "Metallica" and the lyrics were written by Reed. 10. Fans of the two artists were confused by the collaboration, although in our vision we do see, for example, Jonathan Geffen collaborating with the "Hayehudim" band (and we are not afraid of the comparison), many were very afraid of the collaboration and were very pessimistic. When the first single "The View" came out, everyone's fears came true !! 11. In interviews for the album, both sides were moved to tears by the work and the result of the album. "Metallica" said they were excited to work with Lou Reed in the studio every day, and Lou Reed said "Metallica" got the best out of him. In this context, we must say that musically it feels as if the two parties have not even met, let alone recorded in the same studio. 12. Even an objective ear would have a hard time finding interest in the ten tracks on the album that sound quite similar to each other and are drawn or rather "stretched" to an average of 8 minutes per song. Let’s put it this way, there is no flashback, climax, innovation, or anything here that can captivate, surprise, or mesmerize. 13. Both sides acknowledged the harsh reviews from fans, Reed realized that he had forever lost the lone fans of the metal world, and "Metallica" realized that there are fans who find it hard to listen to something different that does not sit so well with the metal world (maybe forgot St. Anger ?). • Soundgarden - Ultramega OK

On October 31, 1988, "Soundgarden's" first album "Ultramega OK" was released. So here are some facts about the album that started this wonderful thing called "Soundgarden": 1. This is the band's first studio album released after two EPs, the first "Screaming Life" released in October 1987, and the second "Fopp" released in August 1988. 2. The first band members to form "Soundgarden" were Chris Cornell who sang and played drums, Hiro Yamamoto who played bass and Kim Thayil who played guitar. 3. Since Chris wanted to concentrate more on singing, they enlisted Scott Sundquist as the band's drummer but after less than a year he decided to leave and was replaced by Matt Cameron . 4. Kim moved with Yamamoto and Bruce Pavitt from Illinois to Seattle. Kim is one of the people responsible for founding the record label "Sub Pop" which was the engine of growth and the main person responsible for spreading the grunge scene that grew up in Seattle. (Photo: Roy Wilkinson) 5. At one of the band's shows Jonathan Poneman who was a broadcaster on a local radio station called KCMU, was very impressed with the band and offered to give them funding. Kim offered to hook him up with Bruce since he was involved in music that took place in Seattle and was Kim's friend. 6. Following the recommendation of Kim, Jonathan and Bruce teamed up and founded the record label Sub Pop. 7. "Soundgarden" signed to "Sub Pop" and released the two EPs we mentioned above under the label. 8. After the EPs the band looked for a way to release their first album under a larger but independent and non-commercial record company. Despite many courtships on the part of large record labels, the band decided to sign with an independent record company called SST Records. 9. Although the album was initially recorded in Seattle, it quickly moved to Newberg. The producer that the record company "assigned" for the band was Drew Canulette who was not at all familiar with the scene and sound in Seattle. Chris said they made a big mistake on this album when they left Seattle and worked with a producer who did not know what was going on at the time in the city. 10. The band members really liked the songs on this album, but they were very disappointed with the production and they thought the album could have been much better but it came out just "okay", which is actually why they gave it the name "Ultramega OK" which means according to the band members Absolutely, unbelievably not bad. 11. Despite the polished and disappointing production, the root characteristics of "Soundgarden" can be identified in this album. 12. The song "Flower" that opens the album was the first and only single released from it. It also came out with a video clip and got a rotation on MTV. 13. The song "Circle of Power" is the only one on the album that Chris did not sing on but bassist Yamamoto. 14. The song "Smokestack Lightning" is a cover of a song by blues singer/songwriter Chester Arthur Burnett known as Howlin's Wolf. 15. The song "Nazi Driver" is very descriptive and "disturbing" which refers to cutting Nazis and creating a dish that feeds the prisoners. 16. Songs "665" and "667" are a parody of devilish elements in rock music such as the number 666. 17. The song "One Minute of Silence" is a cover/tribute to John Lennon 's song "Two Minutes of Silence", which is actually an attempt by the band to "produce" silence for a minute, but despite this, the band can be easily heard in the background. 18. This album earned the band the 1990 Grammy Awards in the Best Metal Performance category. 19. To promote the album, the band went on tour in the United States in 1989 and for the first time in its history also toured in Europe. 20. In 2016 the band purchased the recordings of the album and together with the legendary producer Jack Endino who was one of the mainstays of the music scene in Seattle, they re-released the album with the mix mainly for guitars and Chris' voice expressing the sounds of "Soundgarden" as they should have been. 21. The reissue of the album also includes 6 additional tracks recorded in 1987 by Jack Andino with an 8-channel tape. It touched Marr very much so he decided to give Noel Gallagher a 1960 Gibson Les Paul guitar he had received as a gift from Pete Townshend . 17. Unfortunately Noel managed to break the guitar when he struggled with a fan who took the stage. When Johnny Marr heard it he quickly gave Noel another guitar and not just another guitar, but the one he wrote the song " Big Mouth Strike Again " from the album " The Queen Is Dead " on. 18. In the late 90s Johnny received an offer from Noel Gallagher to join the "Oasis", but at the same time, he was working on other projects, so he kindly refused. 19. In the years 1992-1993 Johnny recorded enough songs to fill an entire album, together with Ian McCulloch known as the singer of "Echo & the Bunnymen". The masters of the recordings disappeared along with the van stolen during their transfer from Johnny's Manchester home to Ian's house in Liverpool. 20. Johnny Marr's parents thought the name of The Smith's " The Queen Is Dead " album was disrespectful to the Queen of England institution, so he asked Morrissey to change the name to "Bigmouth Strikes Again", but Morrissey refused. Johnny Marr's unique style of playing known as "Jungle Pop" has influenced many guitarists, including John Squire from "The Stone Roses" and of course Noel Gallagher from "Oasis" "Face/Off" - Israel's Rock Blog Follow us on Facebook  / Instagram  or Subscribe to our website
