- Cliff Burton First Rehearsal With Metallica
On December 28, 1982, Cliff Burton held his first rehearsal with "Metallica". (Photo: Brian Lew, Official Metallica Website) Singer and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich formed "Metallica" in Los Angeles on October 28, 1981. On this day James Hetfield responded to an ad in the "LA Recycler" newspaper published by Lars Ulrich and the two began playing together, after adding Hetfield's friend and roommate - bassist Ron McGovney and guitarist Dave Mustaine. However, in a short time Ron McGovney's musical faults were revealed, to which were added the arguments and personal frictions he had with his bandmates. This led the three remaining members to start looking for a new bassist. Not far from there, about 30 km outside of "San Francisco", Cliff Burton took his first steps with the band "Trauma", which he joined in 1982. He even recorded the song "Such a Shame" which became a hit and was included in the compilation album " Metal Massacre II" by the record company "Metal Blade Records". The one who recommended Cliff Burton to the members of "Metallica" was Brian Slagel - the founder of "Metal Blade Records", who was also responsible for the release of the first ever recording of "Metallica" in the collection "Metal Massacre I". In late October 1982, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich went to see Cliff Burton play with his band. They immediately realized that they had found the replacement for Ron McGovney. Cliff played the solo part that would later become the instrumental part "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)". James and Lars were stunned by his playing. His wild stage presence and bare-fingered bass guitar soloing, as if it were a lead guitar ,made their jaws drop to the floor. They were sure he is playing the solo on a guitar and count the strings over and over as they refuse to believe that the solo is played on a bass guitar. They knew this was the man they needed in the band and began persuading him to join them. Fortunately, Cliff was getting a little fed up with his band "Trauma" but he had one condition. That the band will move from Los Angeles to San Francisco, his hometown. It suited the members of Metallica, who said they always felt like "outsiders" in Los Angeles, while their shows in the Bay Area in San Francisco were praised. The band agreed. The only thing left was to tell McGovney that he was out of the band. The opportunity came when Mustaine accidentally spilled beer on the pickups of McGovney's bass guitar. After a violent and stormy argument Ron McGovney kicked the band out of their rehearsal room owned by his parents and that was the "last straw". McGovney played Metallica's last show on November 30, 1982 in San Francisco. After a show, he still managed to see his bandmates hanging out with Cliff. Less than a month later, Hatfield, Ulrich and Mustaine loaded their gear into a trailer and headed north to San Francisco. They settled in a house that was given the nickname "MetalliMansion" where the band's first rehearsal with Burton was also held on December 28, 1982. It was the home of their friend Mark Whitaker who also managed "Exodus" and it also served as the band's headquarters for the next three and a half years. Cliff Burton 1st Show with Metallica was held about three months later on March 5, 1983. The rest is history. - Metallica - Lux Æterna
What????? It's unbelievable! with no teasers, no preparation, "Metallica" released a new song, it's first in 6 years (!!), taken from a new album that is on the way, which should be released on April 14, 2023, and will be titled "72 Seasons". The metal giants have announced a new album, their first since 2016's "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct". The album is 77 minutes long, it includes 12 tracks and it was produced by Greg Fidelman, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich. Fidelman previously worked with the band on the 2008 album "Death Magnetic", 2011's Lulu (with Lou Reed), "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct" and their live album "S&M2" from 2020 Hetfield described the concept of the album's title as a reflection on the first 18 years (or 72 seasons) of one person's life. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. At the same time, the band announced a concert tour called "M72 TOUR" which will be held in Europe and North America in 2023 and 2024. The band will perform twice in each city on the tour with the promise of a completely different setlist each night. The names of the songs: 1. 72 Seasons 2. Shadows Follow 3. Screaming Suicide 4. Sleepwalk My Life Away 5. You Must Burn! 6. Lux Æterna 7. Crown of Barbed Wire 8. Chasing Light 9. If Darkness Had a Son 10. Too Far Gone? 11. Room of Mirrors 12. - Iron Maiden – The Writing On The Wall
Friday Release #99 And his name shall be called "Senjutsu". Please open your calendars and mark September 3rd as the day when the 17th album of the "Iron Maiden" will be released. It will happen exactly 6 years (less than a day but who's counting) after the release of the previous album "The Book of Souls". The date is not the only connection of the "Senjutsu" album to "The Book of Souls". The band chose to record the sub-album in the "Guillaume Tell" studio in France where the previous album was also recorded. The writing and recording process was also the same in both cases. The band wrote a song, rehearsed it, and immediately recorded It, when everything was still fresh. Steve Harris noted that the album has some very complex songs that took the band a long time to work on and make them sound exactly the way they wanted, so the process was very challenging. Bruce Dickinson noted that the album was recorded in early 2019 during the break in the "Legacy" tour. Of course, the corona epidemic delayed things. Bruce added that the songs are very varied with one or two songs that sound quite different from Maiden's usual style. As you can see, Steve Harris is also this time the main co-writer for the creation of most of the songs, but there is also a respectable representation here for the Dickenson/Smith duo who are responsible for writing 3 of the ten songs on the album, including the single "The Writing On The Wall" a song that already stands out as nothing less than the anthem !!! which was released on July 15 after a long mask of teasers and hints on the web and social media. "The Writing On The Wall" refers to the story of the "Belshazzar Feast," told in the book of Daniel, during which an inscription appears on the wall, and Daniel interprets it as a prophecy of the destruction of Babylon. Belshazzar the king of Babylon made a great feast for a thousand of his ministers and his concubines in which they drank wine from the vessels of the destroyed great temple. At that time, a hand was seen writing on the Western Wall against the "menorah" the words "Mana Mana Tekel and Persin." The king was frightened and ordered to bring the sages of Babylon, but only Daniel could interpret the "writing on the wall" as the fall of the Belshazzar kingdom and the destruction of Babylon. At night King Belshazzar was killed and Darius took his place. All that is left is to hope that "The Inscription on the Wall" is the first hint of a completely new Iron Maiden album. - New Releases - June 17, 2022
Weekly album review By: אביב בורנשטיין/Aviv Borenstein Fashion Club - Scrutiny This band consisting of one musician, Pascal Stevenson, did not at all think it would reach the center of the stage, she moved between indie bands in the LA area, and only at a later stage did she start recording herself. The style goes between electronic indie and indie rock and it is very difficult to define them. after a few hearings, I also did not really formulate a solid opinion. Some songs sound like they were taken from the synthesizer days of the eighties. This is not a big album, it fits the indie definition. For Listening: Spotify Cola - Deep in View This punk trio, originated in Montreal. The band was formed from the remains of another band, which I did not know and most likely this album will not make me know them better. I have no idea what they were thinking when they chose the name (cola)? This Canadian indie band, moving away from electronics and staying true to guitars. There's some punk here, some alternative. They sound to me too similar to "Arcade Fire" and even "The Strokes" at times. Yes, I know you are now thinking they must be good. But in the few times, I listened to the album it just didn’t catch me. There are dozens of bands that sound similar. I did not find anything special about them. For Listening: Spotify TV Priest - My Other People This British rock band, which is generally defined as post-punk, is releasing a second album. It's a pretty nice achievement for a band formed in 2019. I Must mention that when I was listening to them for the first time, I thought I was listening to an old Nick Cave album. It sounds very old Nick Cave. It's even pretty good. But still, this is not Nick Cave anyway. Finally, it is a better album than the previous two (Fashion Club and Cola). For Listening: Spotify Perfume Genius - Ugly Season "Perfume Genius" is not really a band, it is the stage name of Michael Eldan Adras. They are defined as indie rock / rock and all sorts of other genres. But basically, this is an album, suitable for cold weather, when you sit in front of the fire and look for atmospheric music. There are some better tracks here. But in the Israeli heat and humidity of mid-June, I do not know.... It's a bit problematic, especially at first listening that happened at noon. For Listening: Spotify Nova Twins - Supernova How fun is it to come up with no expectations and then discover a pleasant surprise. So these two lovable Brits, are not sisters in reality. Looking at the picture I really thought I would get a dance album. But it's rock, punk and it's just catchy and charming. What a pleasant surprise this was. An album without self-importance, just created to make fun and it does it. Finally. Listen to them, you will not regret it. There's everything here. But mostly fun. For Listening: Spotify Foals - Life Is Yours The known British rock band, with album number 7. A good album, it might have been hard to listen to it right after the "Nova Twins". But this is a good album. It's a lot more electronic than I thought. In some arts, the drums sound as if they are electronic. But it is still a likable album. For Listening: Spotify Flasher - Love Is Yours This is an indie-pop band from Washington DC. They were formed by two friends from school. But a lot of the bands were formed that way, so there is nothing really new here. I do not have much to say. The album has a combination of electronics and again there is a feeling that there is nothing new and interesting enough here. It's not that it's bad. But in reality, there are so many similar bands. Again, I did not find anything particularly noticeable here. For Listening: Spotify Dan Reed Network - Let's Hear It for the King This American rock band has been active since 1984 and strangely enough, they have not really succeeded. The band was formed by two "Dan". Dan Reed and Dan Fred. I must point out that I've never heard of them and the truth is it's a little sad. Because this is an excellent album. It really sounds like 1980s rock, a bit of "Bon Jovi" and a bit of a lot of bands that corresponded with rock that is accessible to the audience. Just a great album and a fun one. Highly recommend it for nostalgia lovers. For Listening: Spotify Calum Scott - Bridges I did not hear of him until this week. According to his number of followers on Spotify, I'm probably living in a bubble. I listened to the album and it sounded very familiar. A singer with a very strong voice, mostly accompanied by keyboards, but not only. Then I listened to the lyrics and just loved it. The man has insane power in his voice and his songs come from places within the soul. One of the songs and I will put a link to his song first, is probably coming from a real place of pain. He is declared gay and apparently, his family did not accept it. This is one of the creepiest songs I've ever heard. In my opinion, the potential for a crazy hit, is even greater than "Hozier". Listen to it. Let it seep. He is truly amazing. For Listening: Spotify Alice Merton - S.I.D.E.S. This is the singer's second album. She was born in Germany, but she is English, Irish, Canadian... to tell you the truth, I got lost there ...but it does not really matter. It's rock, pop and this it's an excellent album by a singer who can make it big. It is catchy. Admittedly a bit poppy. But pop does not necessarily mean bad. I like it. For Listening: Spotify Bartees Strange - Farm to Table This is a British musician, that combines hip hop with rock, pop, and folk. There is everything from everything here. I did not manage to listen to it enough times, but, it's a good album, with great potential. For Listening: Spotify Final words... I was looking forward to Alanis Morissette's album. I started listening to it. It's not really an album, it's just atmospheric yoga music. Therefore it is not on the list. - Tenacious D - The Who Medley
(Almost) Friday Release #142 They stated that they have been working on this medley for 20 years, Is that so? It seems to us that they dreamed of performing "The Who" in such a good and entertaining way for 20 years, even though it was part of their setlists since 2019. But why does it really matter? "Tenacious D" throws on us the cool cover version that incorporates a medley of three pieces from the "Tommy" rock opera by "The Who" and it's beautiful, and it's exciting and it's entertaining... This is the band's first release after the 2018 "Post-Apocalypto" album and after the tribute they made to the cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", with the single "Time Warp", released in 2020. "The Who"'s cover medley includes the songs "Pinball Wizard," "There's A Doctor," and "Go To The Mirror!", All from the masterpiece album "Tommy" and it will be released as a single with all profits going to "Everytown For Gun Safety", In In Support Of Gun Control. This time too, the single is accompanied by a cool and funny video clip with tributes to the original film "Tommy". The producer of the video clip is an old friend, who collaborates with the duo almost regularly Liam Lynch and also directed the band's cult film from 2006, "The Pick Of Destiny". - Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert
A little over two months after the death of Taylor Hawkins the drummer of the Foo Fighters, the band announces the holding of two tribute concerts in his memory. - An Evening With Walkways
We have been thinking about how to open this review all night. What to say about our so powerful experience yesterday evening, with "Walkways". Words like spiritual gathering, cosmic encounters, and musical worship, came to our minds and continued to play with our emotions, but we still could not put our finger on the appropriate description. To tell the truth, even now we do not know how to describe it. There is a fear that everything we write here will simply detract from the intensity, the energy, and the insane impact of what happened in the "Chaos" rehearsal room on Hamiktzoa st, in South of Tel Aviv on March 9, 2022. One thing we can say for sure is it was one of those moments where you feel something phenomenal is going to take place, moments that are never forgotten, those moments that are not only carved in your memory but also carved in your heart and soul !! that was the moment! The band "Walkways" held an event like no other has done in the country (at least to the best of our knowledge). An intimate performance in a rehearsal room in south Tel Aviv, where they hosted about 40 of their addicted and devoted fans. It may sound like a calm, quiet, and pleasant unplugged show, but the "Chaos" rehearsal room has exploded with energies and power that we are sure has not been there since its exist. As music addicts and the band groupies (yes we are proud of it, even at our age), needless to say, from the moment we bought the tickets, our excitement level rose to insane levels. We did not know what to expect, how this whole special encounter between a band and its fans would take place. How will the dynamics between the fans and the band will interact, among themselves, among the fans, and especially what will be played there (before the show an email was sent to the audience who purchased tickets and invited them to choose songs to be on the setlist) and whether the band members will answer the 97,347 questions we have about them and their music. Indeed, we knew that this event was going to be insane since it was still a huge band with tremendous talent and music that penetrated our veins. Just like little kids getting excited in line for an amusement park facility, we climbed the musty staircase following the “signs”. A blank A4 page with an arrow and the letter "W" that only the band's fans could recognize, constantly instructed us to go up, not to stop, keep going up, when on each floor we felt we were approaching the "Olympus", which only intensified the growing excitement. We arrive at the entrance and we are greeted by Avihai (the bassist) with radiant eyes and a smile from ear to ear, "I can no longer wait to start playing" he says and we reply trying to control our excitement "we can't wait for you to start". We go inside and with great excitement, we shake the hands of Ran (singer), Bar and Yoni (guitarists), and Priel (drummer). True, we are not 16 years old anymore and it's a bit pathetic but... (we don't give a @#$!). When you meet face-to-face musicians and artists who excite you so much, people whose work penetrates your heart and soul and makes you feel something so powerful, you are thrown back in time to age 16. You fly without wings to a place where the connection to music has no boundaries or barriers. There is no room here for age, gender, race, or anything else that labels you or puts you in a frame, and a quick look at the shirt you wear (which of course bears the band name) and most of those present, gives you the reinforcement that you are in the right place, with the right people. Your brothers & sisters from another mother. The band members walked around the room and spoke with the fans, and of course, we took advantage of the opportunity to ask all kinds of fascinating questions, like how they record such a powerful album as "Bleed Out, Heal Out", how they moved up from performing in the "Barbie" club in Tel-Aviv to a European tour as an opening act to "Memphis May Fire" and "In Flames". How they find the right sound for one song or another, how they switch so fast from a standard guitar tune to a drop C or D during the show, and how they create the wonderful and so mesmerizing dynamics in the songs... Needless to say, all of the band members were very patient with our questions and answered them in detail. After waiting for the show to start and greeting the fans, which felt according to the band members themselves like a wedding reception or bar mitzvah, the real thing began. As soon as the first note of the opening song "Blood Into Water" was played, an enormous crazy volcanic eruption took place that lifted the whole building of the "chaos" in the air !! Just try to imagine what it looks and sounds like when 40 possessed fans, who wrap their favorite band in a small, dark rehearsal room, swing the "Air Guitar" to the sounds of Bar and Yoni's guitars, beat their bodies to the sounds of Avihai's bass, hovering up and down in the air with every blow of Priel's snare and bass drum and shouting into insanity along with the huge voice of Ran Yerushalmi !! The amazing and unusual thing (and we are sure you will now hospitalize us) is that the sound did not pass through the ears as it usually does base on the laws of physics. In that room, the sound was passed cosmically through electrifying energies. The energies of the band members conveyed the sound straight to the guts, body, and soul of the audience, and believe us, we witnessed that first hand !! Now add to that the fact that the setlist which was taped to the floor in a few places, was written in secret code that was not understandable by the audience so we did not understand what were are going to hear, which added even more excitement and enthusiasm. The band members have given their soul in every song they played, playing and singing to their powerful audience right in front of their face, it is an experience that is hard to describe. Occasionally Ran walked among the crowd, hugging, shaking hands, and singing but most of the time he was raging, jumping in the air and screaming his soul. Each and every one of the five members gave 300% of themselves, when already after the second song it was clear to them that if the show continued at such a high intensity, it was not at all clear how it would end. Between the songs the band members shared some behind-the-scenes stories and among other things we were able to gather the following details: * The band members shared that they were surprised by the audience's choices to include songs from the first album in the setlist. Because unlike shows abroad, where they felt that the latest album was more dominant, in Israel they discovered that their fans have a very strong connection to the first album. * In the song "Blood Into Water" from the first album, there is in the booklet of the disc, a text that does not exist in the song itself and within the short text there are the words "Blood Into Water". Ran said the lyrics were written in the context of gratitude, as a band, for their ability to turn all the painful difficulties and challenges they are going through in life into songs that do other people good. * Ran shared about the song "You Found Me". This is a song he wrote and dedicated to his wife, who took him and picked him up when he was at the bottom, with all the aggression, complexes, and problems. She "found him", supported him, and made him a whole person. * The song "Trumpet Call" was written about the trauma Ran experienced in a difficult relationship, a time in which he almost reached a state of insanity. He said that after the severe crash, all he had in mind was revenge, just like in the movies. He chose to deal with all the "shit" and with the help of treatments and especially the music he managed to overcome it. There is a section in the song that refers to Corey Taylor from the band "Slipknot": "Corey slip your words around my soul Knot me in control!" Ran said that during this time "Slipknot" was one of the bands that helped him deal with the difficulties and challenges. * The song "Unbearable Days" refers to the terrible days that each of us has at different times in life. The song talks about the fact that this is precisely the time when we have the opportunity to grow and change as human beings and these are the important moments. Bar said there are not many songs in which he writes, but in this song, he wrote the C-part and it connected amazingly with Ran's part. The combination of the two parts brought by each of them, became something whole and big and for him, it was very moving, he dedicated the song to his wife. * In the beginning, the band's name was "Prisoners of Consciousness", the band played metal in Hebrew, and some of the songs from the first album are songs created in Hebrew. For example, the song "OUT" was generally a cover of a song by Ephraim Shamir called "True, you are beautiful." Another example is the song "Skin Deep" whose first version was a song in Hebrew called "Elephant's Skin". you can hear it here... We have not yet recovered from the cosmic, extracurricular, and spiritual experience we went through. It's an amazing thing to be in one room, face to face, at eye level with such a large and amazing band, that with its talent embraces the audience and gives it a different, unique, and heavenly musical experience. We will finish with an important message !! Before concluding, it is important for us to address the difficulties that young artists experience in Israeli music. It always frustrates us to think that an artist in Israel cannot concentrate only on creation and must work in other jobs in order to exist. Some difficulties are experienced by those young musicians and artists, in the struggle for success, especially if the music is not considered "mainstream". How difficult it is for them to fulfill their creation, their dreams, and how difficult it is for them to bring it to us, to the audience, to make us happy and excited. Internalize it well, you can not live from music that is not "mainstream" in Israel, period! The artists we love so much must work and make a living to survive and then the routine and existential needs destroy everything. The music gradually gets lower priority and slowly fades away. And here, we, the fans, need to take action !! Go to shows, purchase albums, t-shirts, hats, and other band's merchandise, and support them in any way possible so we can continue to enjoy the music we love so much and must consume just like food. We hope and pray that we can continue to enjoy the music of "Walkways" like the rest of our favorite bands. That they will be able to earn a decent living and create their music freely and without inhibitions !! "Face/Off" - Israel's Rock Blog Follow us on Facebook / Instagram or Subscribe to our website
- Liam Gallagher – Everything’s Electric
Friday Release # 130 A new single from an upcoming album of singer Liam Gallagher that includes a collaboration with the one and only Dave Grohl, and no, Dave did not yet succeeded in his mission to reunite "Oasis". In October 2021, Liam Gallagher announced his third solo album "C'mon You Know", which is expected to be released on May 27, 2022. This will be his first solo album since "Why Me? Why Not?", Released in 2019. The first single from the album "Everything's Electric" was written in collaboration with Dave Grohl who also plays drums in the song. As you may recall, Dave Grohl is trying to get brothers Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher to talk again and bring about the reunion of "Oasis". Dave took the stage during the Foo Fighters' performance at the Reading Festival in 2019, to tell the audience that he was "trying" to reunite "Oasis." In response the angry Noel Gallagher referred to Dave's remarks during his performance in San Diego, California on 2019 and noted: "If the f** king drummer from Nivarna wants to get Oasis back together he can come up onstage and suck my f** king d**k anytime he likes". It is interesting to note that the one who produced Liam Gallagher's album is none other than Greg Kurstin, the Jewish and multi-instrumentalist producer, who has been collaborating with Dave Grohl for two years in a row, performing songs by Jewish artists in honor of Hanukkah. In this context read and watch here: 1. Kurstin x Grohl: The Hanukkah Sessions 2020. 2. Kurstin x Grohl: The Hanukkah Sessions 2021. On this album the band returns to work with legendary producer Rick Rubin who worked with the band on the masterful albums " Blood Sex Sugar Magik " [1991], Californication [1999], By The Way [2002], Stadium Arcadium [2006]. The band noted that the work on the album was uplifting and enjoyable. When they started writing the material for the album, they listened to old songs of bands like "The New York Dolls" and "The Kinks" and gradually started bringing in new ideas. They added that they spent hours in the studio, together and separately, to make the best album they could and that they were just grateful for the opportunity to be together in one room. The album is expected to include 17 songs spanning 73 minutes. - Jethro Tull - Shoshana Sleeping
Jethro Tull's new single/album in 18 years!🪄 One sleeping woman named Shoshana (which means rose in Hebrew)... Who's "smell" 🌺 have awakened a huge dinosaur after a coma of 18 years ...18 years since Jethro Tull's latest new material! 'Sleeping Shoshana' is the "first swallow" from a new album... Yes, Yes! Which will be released on 28/01/22, along with 11 other fragrant roses, as part of a completely new gene... The Zealot Gene (the album's name)💿. In Sleeping Shoshana... The giant Ian Anderson, whose years have added to his voice an even deeper and "older" layer of medieval-like storytelling... continues to fascinate us, as if we were children who listen to him in silence around the tribe's bonfire 🔥, especially as he continues to play his flute so magically 🧙♂️... even if it's a "modern timed" song (less than 4 minutes) compared to the first days of the prog dinosaur. All this alongside a rather heavy riff that leads us through the dark forest, full in enchanted fairy tales... which is also reflected in the black and white video depicting the song's adventure in an animation of wax dolls and shadow puppets. We can just keep fantasizing🔮 what more fragrant Shoshana/roses are waiting to join in the giant's awakening. Ian Anderson said that in the album's lyrics he weaves the evil within the general good, as part of his fondness for ancient biblical stories and the Bible... As part of the birth⚡of a new gene! ‘The Zealot Gene’ Track listing: 1. Mrs. Tibbets (5:54) 2. Jacob's Tales (2:13) 3. Mine Is The Mountain (5:40) 4. The Zealot Gene 3:54 5. Shoshana Sleeping 3:41 6. Sad City Sisters (3:40) 7. Barren Beth, Wild Desert John (3:37) 8. The Betrayal Of Joshua Kynde (4:06) 9. Where Did Saturday Go? (3:53) 10. Three Loves, Three (3:30) 11. In Brief Visitation (3:00) 12. The Fisherman Of Ephesus (3:41)
